DaimlerChrysler’s Jeep division has introduced its long-awaited Liberty sport-utility
vehicle (SUV). Sized between the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, it will replace the former.
Liberty SUVs will have a wheelbase of 104.3 inches and offer a trailer-towing option with a
heavy-duty cooling system and a trailer wiring harness. The standard power plant is a
2.4-liter, 154-hp DOHC four-cylinder engine, backed by a five-speed manual gearbox. The
engine towing enthusiasts will want is the optional 3.7-liter SOHC V-6. It’s backed by
either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. Four-wheel drive will be available
with all engine and transmission combinations. Tow rating is 5,000 pounds with the V-6 and
automatic.
