District Court Judge OKs RVers' Voting Rights

October 13, 2000

A U.S. District Court ruled in favor of about 9,000 RVers who call themselves Escapees in
Polk County, Texas, allowing them to vote in the upcoming election (unless overruled by an
appellate court). The court continued an order keeping the county — which is located about
75 miles northeast of Houston and has a population of approximately 40,000 — from blocking
their voting rights. County residents complained that the RVers shouldn’t be allowed to
vote using a local RV-park address.
