GM Leads Shift to Custom Ordering

General Motors’ new chief executive, G. Richard Wagoner, recently announced that GM plans
to have as many as 80 percent of its vehicles custom-ordered by customers within three
years. The company has spent billions of dollars in information technology and the
Internet, and intends to modernize the firm’s methods of doing business and become more
competitive.
