Independent repair shops have been an endangered species because automakers have refused to
provide them with technical information needed to diagnose and repair modern vehicles.

Manufacturers caved in when threatened by proposed legislation that would have forced them
to release even more information to independent repair shops. This is good news for
consumers who prefer independent repair shops, which usually charge less for repairs than
do dealers.
