America is known for its sweeping vistas, towering cities and rugged seacoasts. But what
are the 10 most-spectacular panoramic views? That was the challenge placed before the
Society of American Travel Writers, one of the largest professional organizations of travel
journalists and photographers in the world. In a survey of its members, these writers and
photographers selected the following as the greatest views in America: 1. New York City
viewed from the Empire State Building, the view from the Staten Island Ferry, the view
across the Hudson or the view when flying into New York at night. 2. South or North Rim of
the Grand Canyon in Arizona. 3. Helicopter view of the Na Pali Cliffs of Kauai, Hawaii. 4.
Monument Valley, Arizona. 5. San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge. 6. Yosemite Valley,
California. 7. The Chicago skyline seen from a boat on Lake Michigan. 8. Big Sur,
California. 9. Diamond Head, Honolulu, Hawaii. 10. The National Mall, Washington, D.C.
