Ford 250 PSD 6.4 SD '08 4x4 Crew
total wt: 8550 ( two people, dog , some luggage, hitch)
GVW: 10,000
Pin wt: 2100
Total hitched : 10650 (truck fails here)

Cameo 34'
dry wt: 11,733
total wt: 14,000

Max fiver for this truck: 15,300
Truck payload: 2400
GCVW : 23,000
Truck also fails in pin wt-payload.

We are new to this Rv life. I allowed a salesman to convince me that I had the correct truck for the fiver we planned to purchase. In fact, we purchased one that was "lighter" than the one we originally planned to buy, and one of the lightest that Carriage makes. Our overall weight and pin weights are less than what appears to be a majority of fivers in the same length of fiver class. If we exceed the GVW ( ok with the GCWR : within the 23000) but fail in the other categories, what are the real safety ramifications?
If a majority of five drivers are also over their GVW limits, where are the GVW "police", and why don't we see more catastrophic accidents? After all, it is not so much a towing issue as it is a "stopping " issue. You would think that industry wide there would be some sort of listed recommendations for trucks and fifth wheel manufacturers. And you would think that more often the state police would periodically monitor fifth wheel drivers to check on weights, because it just might be a financial gold mine for them with fines and the like.
We now must consider our options, among which would be to purchase a one ton dually, or even a one/one-half dually. I am not certain about the latter, but it certainly would provide a much wider margin of safety. I am bewildered by it all at times, and wonder how many folks feel the same way.
Thanks for the opportunity to ask questions and "pontificate"! < al fisher

Don't turn this one into a "weight police " thread. It wont last after that happens.

Because it is not a comercial vehicle, the police will not bother unless you are violating some law and carrying more than the door post reccomends in not against the law. The editors of Trailer Life used to just say that it will wear the truck out a little faster-provided of course that you don't overload the tires- but I suppose because of liability they will tell you not to go over the door post weights by a single pound but I'm probably about 300-400 pounds over the door post and I don't have and have never had any trouble. I grew up on a farm before they started puting the weights on the door post and if we wanted to pull something or haul something we just did it. We pulled 127 bales of hay out of the fields with a 48 F1 Ford with an 85 HP six cylinder engine-we didn't drive it 90 miles per hour but it would get it from the field to the barn and we would haul 2000 pounds of feed with it too. This is just my oppinion so take it for what it is worth.

With reference to the "legality" of the discussions about our weights, payloads and the like, there was no intent to create problems, only awareness. If one of us were in an accident that involved a fatality or a major claim with an insurer, and IF our TV's capacity were exceeded in any way, we could be found at fault by the authorities, or by an insurer who does not wish to pay for the claim. Insurers are for-profit companies. They spin a great line about service and coverage, but how many folks do we know who have had hassle after hassle trying to recover a legitimate claim from a reluctant insurer? Above and beyond these issues is safety- especially for a new grandson and a co-pilot of almost 50 years! :-)

Ours GCW is 16,600 fully loaded without the boat behind it. Probably close to 20,000 with the boat in tow. The window sticker from my truck says I can weigh 21,000 GCW

A few years ago I was getting my truck seviced (oil change, lube, etc.)this was a 2000 model when the combined gross wt. was 20,000# and at the same time there was one of the hot shot freight drivers in there with the same model truck and I knew that with the big 40' goose necks and loads that they hauled they must be running more than 20,000# so I asked the owner and he told me that he liscened his truck for 30,000#. I'm not positive, but pretty sure that if there were a liability issue with these weights that both his insurance company, the freight company's insurace company, and the frieght company itself would not have allowed this. Again, I'm not a lawyer (I didn't even stay at a Holliday Inn Express last night)but it just makes sense to me.
