Our Alyssa was only two months old on her fist ever trip in the 5th wheel. She is now almost 10 months old. We purchased a Pack n Play for her and it stays in the 5th wheel.

Maybe some of you campers with more experience can respond to my concern about camping with my kids. NOISE! We started camping just this summer, and my 18 month old son is not really great about going to sleep in strange places. The first time we went out, he screamed until about midnight. Fortunately, we didn't have any really close neighbors. We've somewhat fixed the problem. He seems to sleep better when he's confined (as opposed to on a bed) so we take a pack n play with us, even though he can get in and out of it as he pleases. He sleeps better, but is still not great.

We don't want to aggravate our camping neighbors. Any suggestions?

Sandiphete: simple thought, but camp in your driveway or backyard if possible ...so they get used to the environment in the familiar surroundings of your home... Just a thought.

We use a fan for white noise to help everyone sleep. This blocks out alot of the outside noise. I love to hear the birds, but not at 5am on vacation

Our kids take their bed time "stuff" with them, so even though the bed is different and in a different location, they have familiar items. In our 3 year old's case, this included a huge duffle bag of stuff, and they all have a mini blanket that they were given as a familiar item when they were 5mo. We also use a small LED night light in the trailer so there is just enough glow to see by because at home there are streetlights so there is always some glow through the windows at night. Our 11mo old woke up upset every night this last trip, partly due to a different environment, partly due to teething. She was loud, woke up my son who was loud. I was concerned, but my inlaws who were next to us said they didn't hear anything. I figure we have as much right to go camping as the next person. And the only way to make the trailer a familiar environment is to go camping! Which makes me think, if you do a few camp driveway nights, your 18mo old may become more familiar with it.

Apparently, we're on the right track. We camped out in the backyard several times before we went anywhere (Thank Goodness we didn't have any close neighbors then - the first couple nights were really bad. We take his blankie, stuffed animals, etc. He gets a binkie at night & we keep one in the camper (forgot it the first time we went anywhere.Fortunately WalMart is open 24 hrs!) We do the whole bedtime routine - bath, teeth, books - while we're camping so he inderstands it's bedtime. He is much, much better than the first couple nights in the back yard. I just worry about being a bad neighbor.

We started taking our 2 year old twin boys when they were 6 months old. It still isn't easy, but we enjoy seeing them discover new things. The toughest time for us is bed time. The first night is always terrible, but the second is a breeze. Spotty success for the rest of the trip. We have taken anywhere from 4-7 day stays (no trips over 6 hours away yet), but we have found that anymore than 4-5 days begins to diminish the enjoyment for all!

As others have suggested, keep your routine the same camping as you do at home. If they have a favorite stuffed "friend" take it along. Or, as they get older, we have found they like to have a different "friend" when we're camping so those stay in the RV. Camp driveway is a great testing ground too. The earlier you start your RV routines, the more success you will have. Most of all, don't stop doing what you love because of the kids, do what you love for the benefit of and with the kids! Ours are amazingly social and we think a lot of that comes from meeting new people while RV'ing.

We brought a 2 month old just this year. We debated as to go for the labor day weekend due to his age, but how wonderful it was to explore the rv camping with him. (we are newbies) Just as I was still awing over our new tt, it was great to see him awing at his first campfire. We also did things that we hadn't yet done at home... family walks, fishing, etc..
All the normal stuff ( food, diapers, sleep ) was just the same as home.
