How about the Ford F550? I saw a Super C with an F550 4x4 crew cab chassis. I can't remember the brand, but it was very nice.

Compare the size of the cab between a C-5500 and a E-550. The C-5500 is a MDT (Medium Duty Truck) sized cab. More room, easier engine access.

Actually, the cab section of the C-5500s is (was?) based on the Express/Savana tooling, which makes it pretty darn close in size to the E-series cab. Look at pics of a Kodiak and an Express side-by-side. Windshield and front doors are darn near identical. I'll grant you the easier engine access, but that's just because they stuck a longer nose on it.

You have to add 2 more feet of chassis, but only get the same size coach. Also, the F-series cab is lower and has a lower ceiling so going between coach and cab is not as easy.

Also, Ford does not offer a cutaway version of the F-series, so that would add additional cost.

FWIW, I was just at a major manufacturer's plant visiting, and while I was there, they were being called on by the folks from Hino to push their model. The same folks had provided this group with their Chevrolet cabs for production. I chatted briefly with the rep, and he showed me a photo of a model that would certainly compete with Freightliner, INtnl, or anything else that would run a Super C behind it. He seemed to think the Navistar folks aren't sure what to do right now.

Jimbob, are you saying that Hino was demonstrating a Topkick vice Isuzu? If so that's a new develoment. With the medium duty market the way it is, it would seem like a prime opportunity to capitalize on the model and the distribution system already in place. Also, from what I understand there are several thousand GM medium duties at dealerships so a gap in production would not have a significant impact other than prosepctive buyers canceling orders due to the uncertainty of long term factory support.

Upon second pass thru Hino specs, I'm still convinced they need more engine especially when compared to even Navistar's smallest MDT chassis option, the Durastar 4100. With up to 230HP and 620lbs-ft of torque the class 5 4100 blows Hino's most powerful offering away.

What surprized me was that the Kodiak's D-Max, while having a higher HP rating than either the Hino or Navistar (300hp), only tops out at 520lbs-ft, same torque as Hino's class 6 chassis.

Add to this the strong rumor that Gulfstream will be offering the MaxxForce 9 engine, with 300-330 hp @ 2,200 rpm and 860-950 lb.-ft. @ 1,200 rpm in their super C's in the not too distant future, and clearly Hino needs to step it up a whole lot.

Just one potential buyer's humble opinion....

If U.S. RV buyers can be persuaded to accept cab-forward designs, there are a number of suppliers for truck chassis in the class 6 range (Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, Hino, etc). That is, if the buyers can accept turbo-diesel engines rated for 100% duty cycle, rather than the Duramax ratings for short-duration peaks that GM advertised to satisfy the pickup truck mental street-racing culture.

Isuzu is already doing this in Australia and the made for a Motorhome Chassis is pretty popular. Other Japanese builders are becoming very interested in the market. The Motorhome has a GCVWR of 27,000lbs

In an Australian first, Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) is offering motorhome builders a modified cab chassis straight from the factory, reducing the time and effort required for body fitment by local manufacturers.

Isuzu's NQR 450 Premium (motorhome spec) incorporates an engine inspection hatch instead of the traditional cab-tilt engine access used in most other truck applications.

According to research conducted by insurer Australian Pensioner's Insurance Agency (APIA), two-thirds of Australians over 55 years of age are eager to take a trip for an extended period of time around Australia. This is a ritual, which is most commonly referred to as the trip of the 'grey nomads'.

Comprising of mainly baby boomers, APIA's research finds that almost 50 per cent would like to spend more than four to six months on the road travelling, a statistic that is leading to a burgeoning motorhome industry.

Available in many sizes and with varying appointment levels, the most popular motorhomes are the C Class which offer a good combination of size, appointment levels and affordability.

Isuzu's NQR 450 Long Premium provides the cab chassis for a variety of C Class motorhomes , due to its well regarded specification and impressive level of standard features.

Equipped with an easy-to-use Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), cruise control and multi-media infotainment system including standard satellite navigation and optional (available at extra cost) reversing cameras, the Isuzu truck is one of the most user friendly on the market.

According to IAL Engineering & Product Support Manager, Simon Humphries, the NQR 450's advanced safety features combined with special factory modifications make it ideal for motorhome applications.

"Instead of the usual cab-tilt, which is commonly used for engine access, the NQR 450 Long Premium has been modified to include an engine inspection hatch, providing easy access to the engine for maintenance and repair," Mr Humphries said

"Features such as driver and passenger airbag, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Anti Skid Regulator (ASR), electric mirrors and front and rear stabiliser bars make this truck extremely safe and easy to drive."

In addition to the user friendliness of the truck and car-like comfort features, the Isuzu SiTEC Series II 185 engine is also one of the cleanest and most fuel efficient on the market, according to Mr Humphries.

"The 'New Generation' Isuzu SiTEC Series II engines are rated to a minimum of EuroIV emissions standards, making them some of the cleanest conventional diesel engines available on the Australian market," he said.

"Whilst both the USEPA 04 standard and European measures meet Australia's ADR 80/02 emissions regulations introduced earlier this year, the Isuzu engines emit as little as one sixth of the harmful exhaust particulate matter (PM) standard met by other comparable Japanese trucks.

"Providing this specification truck directly from the Isuzu factory has certainly pleased many motorhome manufacturers, and in turn is making the building process faster and more efficient for customers."
