Unfortunately this week I developed some upper thigh burning/tenderness which over the period of a few days spread up/down my whole leg, up my thigh into my back. What I had feared was correct, I had shingles as diagnosed by my doctor. It seems that so far I am lucky in that I have not too many blisters yet, but the pain in my knee and hip joints seems to be a constant ache and deep pain. Does anyone have any suggestions for relief. To make matters worse, we have been planning a trip with the TT in a few weeks to Fla to watch the shuttle launch and then do some sightseeing. I can't imagine being able to do that with the way it feels now. Any suggestions would be certainly appreciated. Thanks.

I developed shingles just before Christmas this year and was very lucky that I got a prescription from the ER. I didn't have much pain after my fever went down. I never did get the blisters because of the Valtrex. Hope you feel better soon.

There is a vaccine but it's to late for you now. They should have given you Valtrek to limit the spread. It's not only the blisters you see but the ones you don't see that can do more damage to nerves and nerve endings. Hope you feel better soon. Bill

I am just getting over the shingles. The blisters have been gone for two months, but I still have the nerve pain. The Dr. originally gave me valtrex, and when I finished with that, my Dr. put me on neurontin (Gabapentin). The neurontin has really controlled the pain. I hope you heal fast without the ongoing nreve pain. Good Luck!

Thankfully my doctor did start me on the Valtrex and I have been on it for one day so hopefully this will help expedite healing. Meanwhile, I will keep planning our trip and hope for the best!

Nasty stuff. The wife had it in June. Treated at Mayo Clinic. We site below.
Shingles — Comprehensive overview covers causes, symptoms, treatments and prevention, which includes the Zostavax vaccine.
www.mayoclinic.com/health/shingles/DS00098

There is also a cream you put on the blistered area.
The pain was horrid. After about a week she was good enough to do everyday activities.

Lol I guess I was "lucky" when I had the shingles. I was just out of the hospital after having double knee replacement and I was still so doped up on morphine that I didn't know what I had! I couldn't stand water from the shower to touch my back and shoulder and got dh to get some baby shampoo to wash my hair. When I was finally able to get to the doctor and saw a PA she had no clue what it was and put me on a 7 day steroid pack. Two days later when I saw my doctor he said it "looked like shingles" but still didn't treat me for it,took me off the steroid pack and gave me a prescription for a cream.I guess it finally went away on its on.A month or so later, when some of the blisters were still there he finally decided I had shingles the whole time and then put me on Valtrex. Needless to say I no longer go to that doctor.

as I understand this, the shingles shot is not covered by Medicare and costs about $200. I wonder if Blue cross will cover it

Call and ask! From what I understand about shingles, if your insurance does not cover it, you might better pull the money out of somewhere for the shot. DW and I are both going to get it next month. Found out we have to get prescription from doctor and order the shot from pharmacy/drug store. Has to be frozen and kept frozen while taking it to doctor for him to administer it.

Edit: Was informed by pharmacy (national chain) that the Zostavax vaccine has been on back order for quite a while and are having problems getting it. They said the company who manufactures it is having manufacturing problems. That did not sound encourging to me.
