Not a lot of places in NC to just pull over and camp. Have seen it done near South Mountain. And the CGs on the BRP are pretty deserted during the week, and have no hookups.

It's a pretty big state! Where do you plan to be? What do you consider boondocking? There are lots of options depending on what you're looking for.

I consider boondocking going out into the wilderness and just stopping and parking. unfortunately, NC is so overgrown with vegatation that you have no where to go unless it is a cleared property. I guess a state park that allows drycamping would be fine for a start. Would be nice to get out and away from the crowded typical KOA or campground.

As mentioned. The CGs on the BRP is dry camping, and definatly not the KOA

Check out the Pisgah and Nantahala NFs link and click on Mountain Campground List ( 85 kb pdf). There are some developed, primitive, and dispersed camping available.

great info, I will check it out. We are looking for some local areas for our short weekends. We live in Fayetteville. Our favorite place is Willowtree RV esort in Long SC. but want to find something local just to get out on a friday evening through sunday eve. By the way we took a drive to Mocksville and took a look at Meyer Lake. Not for me,,,, I'll keep looking.

It'd help a lot to know _where_ you're interested in camping. It's a danged broad state.

There used to be about a dozen 'dispersed' campsites on the dirt road from Lake James up to Linville Falls (Old NC 105). But it's a rough, steep road, usually taking 4WD. Local hunters will have 'em filled during bear season.

Likewise, a few sites, and IIRC a small primitive CG, along Curtis Ck. Rd. climbing from US 70 at Old Fort to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Also dirt, usually less rough, but danged steep the last few miles, since it climbs the eastern continental divide.

Check out the Uwharrie National Forest in central NC near High Rock and Badin Lakes, lots of camping, hiking and boating and often overlooked.
