Alcohol - one 750ml bottle of booze or 2 750ml bottles of wine per person. If you want to take more, just declare it and pay the duty.

Cigarettes - 200 per person. Want more? Same as above.

Meat - 11 kgs of beef, pork, chicken. No lamb unless it is from New Zealand and clearly labeled in original packaging.

No fresh potatoes, citrus fruits or flowers/vegies growing in soil.

No fireplace wood or any wood that still has bark on it - even if a decorative item.

NO handguns, no mace, no pepper spray, no bear spray.

No wildlife pieces and parts - not even feathers on a cap.

RX's only in original pharmacy bottles.

The point is to declare everything and let them decide what they want to confiscate.

On the way back, the US has different rules as does each Province. Again, declare and let them take it if it is illegal.

BTW - make declarations at the drive-up window. You only get one chance to declare - so said the Canadian agent who admonished me for being 6 cigarettes over the limit. But, it wasn't as bad as the US agent who made us turn around and go back into Canada for 30 miles to remove antler sheds from the MH.

You are wrong about the bear spray. It has to be in a container saying "bear Spray" and has to have EPA approval.

Hikers are allowed to ENTER Canada (and RE-ENTER the USA) with US EPA registered bear deterrents for their own use/protection against bear attacks.

The provinces don't have any jurisdiction over importation of goods (other than radar detectors). The feds look after the border crossings.

Clattertruck,
I concur! The bear spray issue has had a long history of confusion and misinformation. While it was prohibited at one time, the regulations were changed in 1999.
I have made numerous crossings into Canada at six different crossing points and have had no difficulty with bear spray. When asked if I had mace or pepper spray, I always said, "No but I have bear spray." One officer said, "That was my next question!" Another asked if it had a picture of a bear on the container. None wanted to even see it and none asked about the size of the can but the last time I checked, only the 9.2 oz size or larger was allowed.
