I run mine in the middle setting (out of 3), he uses the first (lowest) setting on his truck.
I highly recommend Hypertech. Not the most powerful out there, but the safest.

I surely hope that your acertion is based on research and facts rather than Hypertech advertising. I have seen more than a few blown headgaskets with tuning that Hypertech advertises to be "tow safe to maximum GVWR". If you monitored what the tuning was doing with a scan tool or even had gauges you might feel differently.
I also have a hard time putting any faith in a diesel tuner shootout that only tests 3 of the many tuners available. If there is one thing I have learned about diesel magazines is their facts are partially right some of the time.

It based on something even better, actual experience using the product. I have used Edge, Superchips, and Hypertech on my Dodge diesel trucks. The Edge is a close second (ran fine), but it requires EGT monitoring, and I could get the EGTs too high in some situations with the Edge EZ I used previously; and in the literature Edge provides, they specifically state that monitoring EGT is REQUIRED.
Like I said, I have had no trouble at all running at 20,000# GCW in the mountains with my Hypertech in level 2/3. A close friend has a 2004 Dmax and a Hypertech, no gauges, and pulls a 31' Jayco 5er. He also has had no issues at all using the Hypertech. Don't know what else to tell you.
If you feel it's unsafe in your application, or think it would cause problems, you are free to not use one . It's up to you as the owner of the truck, and the guy that has to pay to repair it if/when it fails - not me. I'm just relating my experience to the OP as that is what was asked for. I'd be the first to add that using a tuner OF ANY KIND on a Ford 6.0L PSD is asking for trouble. Blown head gaskets is what I would expect. However, the OP was asking about a Duramax.
What tuner do you use, or have you ever used, when towing an RV in the mountains?

If you do not plan on adding EGT gauge and larger exhaust, leave it stock.
I run the Predator in my 05 Duramax, and it works very good.
Adding anymore than 40 HP you are asking for transmission issues.

The Predator is famous for high EGTs. The Hypertech is not. I have read all the DMax forums and none have reported any temp problems with the Hypertech. And the Allison 1000 is good to about 100 hp for normal driving.

I have a SCT Tuner with 3 DP tunes. According to this page from DP-tuners they may be able to work with GM vehicles as well. See bottom of Welcome...
You might want to call Jody and talk to him, see if he recommends anyone. He seems to be the best in the Ford PSD arena.

Otherwise for an over-the-counter, I would strongly consider Hypertech.

You obviosly haven't read too many forums. I was going to reply in further detail, but I won't waste my time talking to people who know everything.

EGT gauges are never REQUIRED....neither are chips/programmers
With one you KNOW
With out one you ASSUME
If you chip/program it, cough up the few extra bucks and put gauges in
EGT/Tranny Temp/Boost and for giggles Fuel Press. Unless you're AFRAID of what you will see.

So the charts on the link provided show a whopping 1 second increase in 0 to 60 mph acceleration, give or take some sub-minute change.
Considering the cost, time, and risk - mine will remain stock...
