Well, a new Navion is about $75,000 or more out the door.
Financing that would be almost $1250/month for 6 years at 6%.
Once you figure in insurance, wear and tear, etc., etc. it's obvious why renting on would be rather expensive.
There is a really good reason why RV rentals are so expensiove - the RVs themselves are very expensive.

Yet, sadly, they hold up so poorly that nobody can make money renting out older RVs, either.

WOW!
Now that is quite a statement. Not even with diesel engines?
Given the current economy, I wonder if that will change?
Why don’t these horrifically expensive machines hold up well?

Your confusion over the "private party dealer" (who seems to be a rental broker) issue leaves me wondering how carefully these details were checked.
No confusion at all. It’s a matter of semantics.
I don’t “confuse” easily. Being a sci/tech person I tend to check for dotted I’s and crossed Ts.
There are two insurance policies, ours and theirs.
Thanks.

Were it not for the constant need to fix what usually amounts to problems that could be avoided by quality control in design and/or construction of RVs, these RV.net forums would be only 1/3 as visited as they are.
Overpriced - instant depreciation - constant fixing...these notes ring pervasively throughout the forums.
Puzzles me why we accept it.

We rented a View 24J in 2007 through a local rental place and paid about $900 for three nights. We had to provide an insurance rider, and put down a $1000 deposit. After that experience (and price), we vowed never to rent again from that company.
This summer 2009, we rented (gasp!) a 2007 Access 29T from a private owner for $2000 for two weeks. We provided an insurance rider, and a $500 deposit. Everything worked out really well, and the price was far below the commercial rental places!
Two days ago, we just purchased our first RV! We are so excited to have our own, we can't wait to try it out this weekend! Have a great time renting, it really helps to narrow down what you would like to own. We love the View!

Doesn’t it depend on the model that one chooses? Some are better than others are they not? I have read that diesel engines go a long way before they need work. Some interiors are less cheesy and cheaply made than others.
With respect to purchasing a new vehicle, I don’t know if that is wise. After all, they claim that one loses about 30% the moment it’s driven off the lot. I figure a two to three year old RV might be a good choice.

That sounds about right.
We are trying to run the numbers. One can go on quite a few long trips for what it costs to purchase.

Congratulations!
What made you decide on that particular brand, class and model?

We actually loved the View when we rented one, but bought a 2007 Winnebago Outlook 31C instead. We have two children and a dog, so the View was really too small for long trips. It would be a great size for the two of you, though, and your animals.
We decided on the Outlook because it had nearly everything we wanted, was gently used (so in great shape at a great price), and was available! After having looked and made offers for two years, it was the right coach at the right time. The first ones we offered on were mostly all Winnebagos except for two Fleetwoods and a Tiffin...Jamboree 24D, Tioga 24D, Outlook 24V, Minnie 29K, Access 29T, Sunova 30B (2 of them), Allegro 32BA, and finally, the Outlook 31C. Notice how the size increased over time . Used is definitely the way to go, but it can be tricky finding exactly what you want. With many owners "under water" and trying to sell for their loan amount, most of our offers were not close enough for them to sell.
If it were just two of us, we would have a View by now. But with growing kids and a dog we adopted in March, it wouldn't have been enough room.
Have fun trying them out!

It seems like the engine and tranny are the least troublesome component.
I would let others argue diesel vs gas, but it seems similar to a chevy vs ford kind of discussion most of the time.
Some brands are seem to have better quality than others, but consistency is not like for automobiles. Price can be an indicator, but it is not so reliable.
Many problems seem to be related to the notion that 'the RV manufacturer expects the dealer to assure the rig quality.'

an answer to why so many problems.. an RV is a complete home with all the systems of a home, plumbing, wiring etc.. only your home doesn't rumble down a highway at 65 mph and then bounce over country roads for miles on end. the constant vibration and bouncing creates havoc, with every system, and every appliance and every nut and bold, not to mention that RV's are built with light weight material and the industry is not known for very high quality standards..
but why do we accept it??? because.. as hard as we try to yell and scream at dealers and manufacturers to do better, for so many of us, there's just NO BETTER WAY to travel and vacation than in our crazy wacky but amazing RV's.
