So, my kids are able to get a FREE swine flu vaccine at school. I'm torn. They are normal, healthy kids, so I'm not really concerned about the flu itself.

I'm a bit more concerned about the vaccine itself. It seems that it's been rushed through to have something available. There's been no studies done on it, and no one knows what the long-term effects of this vaccine are.

I have not had my girls get the Gardasil vaccine for the same reasons, and it turns out, from the numerous media reports I'm hearing, that I was right in not having them get the series of Gardasil vaccines.

What are your thoughts about the swine flu vaccine?

You might want to take the latest studies into consideration when making your decision:

"Swine Flu Killing Young Healthy People"

The regular seasonal flu vaccines are new every year as well, with no time for extensive testing. The H1N1 variant is based on essentially the same criteria used for the seasonal vaccines, so I think it's reasonable to expect similar results as to the safety issues.

I don't think normal, healthy kids would be especially endangered by having the flu. From what I've read, people with compromised systems (elderly and very young and folks with chronic conditions) are the most at risk.

My concern about the vaccine is the same as yours: these days it seems like "Let's put the drug out there and see how many bad reactions/deaths we get."

It's so hard to decide, isn't it?

Why are you asking the people here. Shouldn't you be asking your doctor?

I did ask my doctor when I saw him yesterday. He suggested my kids and I get the H1N1 flu shot. He believes the chances of being harmed by the vaccine are less than the chances of harm by getting the H1N1 flu.

In the end, each person has to decide for themselves (or parents for their dependent children) what is best for them. At this time, my husband and I are planning on having our two young kids get the vaccine, along with the entire family getting the normall flu vaccine given each fall.

If the H1N1 flu vaccine is manufactured just like the "regular" flu vaccine like they say, the complication risks should be the same too. Do you and yours get the annual flu vaccine? If I still had a daughter of the appropriate age at home, I would probably get the Gardasil vaccine for her too. I don't recall seeing any "proven" negatives from it. However, I personally know women who have dealt with and died from cervical cancer because of HPV.

If the H1N1 virus had popped up a few months earlier, it would be included in this years' regular seasonal vaccine. Are you concerned about the seasonal vaccine? If not, there's no reason to fear the H1N1 vaccine, as other than the viruses covered, my understanding is that the vaccines are identical (inactive ingredients, etc.).

There's so much false info and confusion out there, please be careful. Very young people and very old people with underlying health issues are most at risk from seasonal influenza. That is NOT true of the H1N1 influenza, where children, pregnant women and younger adults are at highest risk. Many of those who are having complications from H1N1 are reported to be healthy people with no underlying health issues.

I agree that your doctor, or reputable websites such as the CDC or Mayo Clinic, are your best sources of information.

Good luck, I know us parents always wonder if we're doing the right thing.

Doctors aren't always right . . .

I'm merely looking for more opinions and appreciate the responses so far.

I agree. I'm a little concerend about this new vaccine, however, there have been at least 3 deaths attributed to young healthy college age kids in our area. No underlying illnesses. Two were sibs, they died within 10 days of each other. Not an easy decision.

DD has not been vaccinated with the gardisil. No reason to, yet, she's only 11!

I agree with you Julie, it is a little scary to wonder what will happen later on.

In the case of the swine flu anyone older than 50 has already been exposed to the swine flu, the last time it came around. They say we should (over 50) be immune to it, either from having it when young, or been vaccinated from it.

The standard flu vaccine is save and the swine flu vaccine is grown the same way. Do we really know if anything we do is totally safe anymore??
