East and west out of Bullhead City down into the Colorado River and back up the other side, pretty long and pretty steep, but I don't recall the numbers.

There's a pretty good steep 3 mile hill on Hwy 140 between Denio, NV and Lakeview OR, don't recall the name, since it's been +20 years since I've been on it, but it's as steep as I've ever been on.

Grapevine is weak. Maybe the old ridge route but the interstate highway grapevine is easy.

I looked up toward loveland pass and was happy to go through the tunnel.

The author needs to try sonora or ebbett's pass in CA. RVs not recommended.

Toughest I have been up is Nine mile canyon road Nine miles average 10% grade in 116F heat 15 mph curves.

I would rank Slumgullion Pass on Hwy 149 from Creede to Lake City, Colorado as needing to be on the list. It is a mass of hairpin turns all the while winding down the mountain at a 7% clip. It nearly brought me to my knees.

Marty,
Didn't really have the time to post the entire article, just thought the 10 choices that were selected by a Diesel magazine might be interesting to some. The article showed a truck towing a TT in the intro to the article. Guess if you want to know more about the article, purchase a Diesel Power magazine. I don't have the time to post the entire article, it covered about 5 pages with maps and description of the routes that were picked.

NC Hauler thanks for taking the time. It makes an interesting discussion.
As someone stated, the "new" Grapevine isn't that tough. Now, the "old" 3 lane Grapevine was a truck buster.
There are a lot of local roads that most of us don't really travel on that would probably stand your hair on edge as well.
It makes a fun list to look at.

Really enjoyed the post by smkettner on 10/14/09 06:37pm about 9 Mile Canyon and Kennedy Meadows.....I first went there in the early 60's with my grandfather....then the road was dirt all the way from 395......great place to fish......

I have done a few of them. They didnt even mention US-550. The Grapevine I would much rather go up than down. Vail was nothing. Wolfcreek is perty tough along with Loveland. I-40 West bound from Needles and I-15 Baker grade are little hills. I can pull both of them at 65+ yea I know the speed limit is 55 so dont lecture on that.

Now having read the article, thanks for the link rv2go. The list was made up by truckers, suscribers/readers etc and the most votes won. With that in mind......

Some roads like the siskou's, I've only been over in the summer, and did not find the grade personally to be that bad etc. BUT< I have seen news and heard horror stories of trying to go over in the winter! Probably similar to I90 snoqualmie, while only at 3000' and 3-4 % at best, it can be snowing 5-6' a day, closing the roads to clear avalanche chutes every 6-8 hrs, sometimes being closes for upwards of 72 hrs for weather to clear so the DOT can keep up with the clearing of the roads and too many uncontrolled avalanches coming down etc.......

As the article states, send in you horror story going over a given pass/road, and it would not surprise me if at some point in time ALL the roads in the two books, mtn pass of western or eastern US are listed in the mag some how shape or form. I can think of two or three just here in Washington that make that book, ie Chinook and US 20, both closed in the winter due to no way for DOT to keep up with the snow, as they both get 20+ feet of snow, parts of the roads still have 20-40' of snow during May when they do try to plow thru due to winter snows and avalanches. If there is 40' in mid May, what was there in early April during typically the peak snow pack?

Anyway, interesting reading, sure to make some good conversation from folks on here, other forums, and more articles in that rag. It would be interesting if they had some limits or requirements as to what is, such as min 6%, length on way 5 miles, min 2 hairpins....but even then that is subjective. or interstate vs state hwy vs county roads where interstates are limited to 6 or 7%, state roads here in Washington I have seen as high as 10%, locals into the low 20% range......

I guess keep it clean so Barney does not have to work too hard editing etc.
