If you have a plate from other trailer just fasten it to your new purchase. Not quite the right way but least hassle. We bought new unit in Michigan and just fastened our old plate to new unit and paid GST at border and PST when transfered in Ontario. Asked at DOT before hand and decided to do it my way. Much simpler

If you are buying in Michigan, and NOT going to register it there, how are you going to tow this across the border without any registration or tags on the trailer? That would likely throw up some red flags with customs on both sides of the fence!!
Very good question. I don't believe you can register it here until you've imported it, but can't tow it on the road unless it's already licensed. If the friendly local law enforcement pulls you over, they are unlikely to just accept this situation for what it is and let you carry on.
When I imported mine I got all the paper work from the seller, Called an 800 number for my Canadian insurer, faxed them the paperwork & got a fax back with the temp license. Oh yea - paid about $35.00 by CC. This is provincial run insurance but I would be surprised if most insurance companies have a similar procedure.

Ok, I think I am making progress here.
The company who is going to tow the trailer is insured internationally and their license plates will be used. So I have that problem solved.
FYI, I called Michigan Secretary of State, they have told me that they have something like "In Transit" plates.
Now, my next problem is how to pay for the trailer.
I can not bring that much cash with me. The guy does not want personal cheque or certified cheque (takes a month to be cleared).
I do not like Western Union. They will charge me $700 for the transfer.
Does anybody have any idea how this could be done? I am going to the bank tomorrow to get more info, but any advise from you guys would be appreciated.

When I purchased my MH in the spring of 2008, I got a "Bank Draft" from the Royal Bank here. I asked for a certified cheque in USD but was told for US transactions, they use a "Bank Draft". I was headed "From Royal Bank etc." to "J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, NA" in Syracuse NY. I assume there is some mechanism within the US system that makes this the equivalent to a US Certified cheque given it is drawn on a US bank.
The dealer wanted to see what I was paying with before I arrived so I faxed a copy of the draft to their Business Mgr. He was then able to satisfy himself that it was legit particularly because it was drawn on a US Bank.
I can understand the seller's concern - you might follow up with your bank as to what they have that will satisfy a US seller and see if he would be OK with something similar to what the Royal provided. Sending a faxed copy allows him time to verify the legitimacy and get back to you with any concerns. You don't want to carry cash across the border - over $10K MUST be declared at Customs but they had no problem with the Bank draft.
Not sure if this would work for you but might give you an option for consideration.

A money order in US funds should be fine. They usually end up drawn from a bank in the US and this bank will be listed on there somewhere.

#1 - no, you don't pay any taxes in Michigan. The dealer writes " export to Canada" where the tax numbers should be, and they don't register it to you.
#2 - Thedealer can issue you a temp plate, which i believe is good for 30 days
#3 - Do not bring over $10,000 cash over the border, US Customs has the right to seize it from you!

All done! The trailer is in Canada.
It looked easier than I thought. Although I went well prepared.
Anyway, importing a trailer from US to Canada is doable and relatively easy to be done. And it saves you a lot of money.
Thank you everybody for your comments. If anybody has any specific questions about the process feel free to ask.
