We travel with 3 dogs, two big & one small. We are boondockers & avoid RV Parks. If we are hiking near our campsite the guys always come with us. They are well trained & we never have to use leashes unless of course we are forced into an RV Park for a night. We do a lot of day trips & the gang is fine in our 33' motorhome. Always make sure to have lots of water & ventilation. Our day trips usually last around 6 or maybe 7 hours & when we get home the bums are usually sound asleep but totally happy like nuts to see us.....& vice versa) We've never had a problem.

We have a local Home Hardware that has a sign on their door, advising patrons to bring their dogs into the store and not to leave them in their vehicle. Guess which hardware store gets my business?

I think this store has a great management team and would surely have my business as well.

As you can see from the responses, all it takes is some creative thinking and a dose of patience.

I’ve been on the road with my dog/s for about 5 years now. It was a challenge at first, but once I got into the groove of things. Well, the rest as they say “is history“…LOL

Good luck and your dog is so very fortunate.

Same as has been said--if we can't take our beloved dog, Rufus, on the trail or into the store, if it is cool we leave him in the truck. If we are gone for several hours, we leave him in the fiver. The only time he seems to have trouble is if we are gone after dark so we now leave lights on if we will be late and leave the TV on. That seems to make him happy.

Dogs really react to our mental state. If we leave them and feel good about it they pick up the message. If we are tuned into them, we pick up their feelings like nighttime with Rufus.

Good timing with the OP's question. I was about to ask the same thing myself. We have a 2-1/2 yr old Boxer/Bulldog mix and she's always with us when we camp. But we've never travelled yet with her to any NP's or other sight-seeing areas. Glad to read about all those comments/advises from all the posters. Give me an insight on what to do when we go next year to YNP/GT, Mt.Rushmore & GC. Thanks Babs07 for your post.

RES1749

The only thing to remember about NATIONAL PARKS & MONUMENTS is that there are very FEW {if any} trails that allow dogs to be on!!

Most STATE PARKS on the other hand AND some USFS, COE & BLM areas WILL usually allow dogs on leash to accompany you on the trails.

So we try to do a mix of both as we travel. AND since he's a big water dog we make a point of looking for places with lakes or streams or beaches {altho you still have to be AWARE of the Rules about doggers in the water!!}

Thus often, we search for things or places a little off the beaten path "with him in mind that ARE more dog friendly" ... and find that we enjoy that time just as much as the "more popular and crowded" sightseeing.

We also pick up a prescription from our vet, so that when we have to leave our pupper in the RV while we're out sightseeing, we give him one pill about 1/2hr before we leave, and then we leave a fan or AC and the radio or TV on for him -- and he usually crawls into "his bed" and naps & snoozes for about 3-4hrs ... We HAVE to leave at least one curtain up for him to look out though, OR he will tear the blinds down

If we leave him in the truck, while we're on the road - it's only for an hour or two at most AND then ONLY if it's cool enough outside.

We usually do our longer trips in Apr/May or Sept/Oct, to avoid the hotter weather. But regardless, we always try to park or camp in the shadiest spots. We also SHORTEN our sightseeing, if it does turn out hotter than expected.

Of course ours loves to travel with us and would be broken hearted if we left him home -- THAT and to board him out for several weeks at a time would cost us a small fortune! And a sitter or even our daughter wouldn't be able to "manage him" for more than a few days {he starts getting into all kinds of mischief like a teenager testing to see what he can get away with!!}

He's sprawled out by my feet now ... being the BEST of boys LOL. Probably dreaming of all those ~trips I've been thinking of for next year AND yes, I'll be looking for all those "little side trips", too

We do as most have said. We usually make our plans around the dogs. View sites form the car or very short jaunts to visitor centers and such. Not having kids we plan around summer so the heat is mostly not a problem

Not a huge fan of leaving them in the trailer but that's just us.

We have left the dogs in the truck while in a restaurant with the air and engine running. That has worked ok. It doesn't seem to hurt mpg. We have left dogs in the camper with the tv running and the shades down. have a 2 dog friendly neighbors who check on the dogs. There are people in the campground who are dog sitters and will check on dogs and take them for a walk as well as check food and water. But we do miss some places such as the golf hall of fame because we were not allowed to take dogs on the property.

Hi,
We are new to Rving, but my sister has a yellow lab that she takes almost everywhere. She cleans up after him and he is very well behaved when he gets lots of exercise. Bring a portable water container, and some treats. The only place she can't and wouldn't bring him is the grocery store. People are very pet friendly these days.
Good luck, have fun

If we leave the boys (2 scotties) in the motorhome, the air/heat is left on to insure their comfort. This summer we weren't content that the two roof air conditioners would meet our requirements, so we bought a floor air conditioner, it was very comfortable. If by chance, they must stay in the vehicle for a bit, we use our remote car starter to leave the car running with air conditioning on and are sure to have them in eyes sight. If these options are not ok, they will stay at a day kennel or perhaps go for a bath and comb out at the nearest groomer's.

Thanks for asking the question and all the responses.

I was about to post the same thing. We have two dear doggie companions that we miss terribly when we travel. They either get boarded or we have a pet sitter who lives in our home.

Our issue is an old standard poodle. He’s 13 1/2 with some serious hip arthritis problems and has recently gone deaf. He is very frustrated by his recently developed handicaps. We are devastated, but grateful he’s still with us, still eating well and enjoying our company. He does not feel comfortable when we leave the room if he believes that we are still in the house. If he sees us go out the door to the garage he seems to take it in stride as he always has.

We are doing an RV trip because we no longer want to leave him if at all possible.

We hope to be able to do at least a few walks, rather than hikes to see how the guys take to RVing. In the summer we would worry about leaving them in a rig for any length of time.

I believe it is easier with small dogs. The little one can always be picked up. There is no way we could carry a 65 pound poodle if he conked out along the way. . .
