Since they are apt to return or others to replace them, it might be better to look at how you could make your property less attractive to the raccoons, or even to use something like a pet-sized electric fence, (google "fido-shock") sprinkler/hose, chuck rocks at them when you see them, whatever. They need to learn to avoid your property and you.

And if your dog is not under sufficient verbal control to be ordered back if she goes after one, then keep the dog on a leash when they're apt to be around. Pain in the hiney but a lot less pain than watching your dog lose a fight to a raccoon.

I cannot believe you people are considering trapping raccoons, do you not know they are BIG carriers of rabies. A friend of mine had to get the shots cost him $8300.00. Why do you think animal control wont try to trap them. If one bites you you will need to get the shots because if he has rabies and you dont get the shots YOU DIE.

Never known a beagle who could come when you called him if he was on track. Our beagle would still be baying under a tree if we didn't physically drag him back into the house. But everytime he messed with a raccoon (or a skunk) the stupid dog learned his lesson and stopped sooner. (He always lost, especially with the skunks...).

In the Pacific Northwest, Raccoons & Possums also carry distemper! Beware of raccoons and posssums!

Thanks for some good responses. As an update - the animal control guy came out to get the raccoon but said they no longer relocate them when they become aggresive. So he euthanized it and left the cage to get the other. Hate to see an animal killed but it was painless. We have had trouble with these critters every few years and there is really nothing on the deck or in the fenced yard for them to eat except a few plants they tend to dig up for worms or grubs or something. In the process they often break the pots. Found they will eat about anything but they love marshmellows, peanut butter, and fish of any kind. The electric fence is interested may look into that but getting rid of them seems to last for a year or two and most of the others would run off rather than stand their ground, so that seems to he the short term solution. My wife was in a local quilting store today that recenty had a raccoon or two get in somehow and they made a terrible mess. The animal control guy says just to many of the critters in this area.

I had a mutt who was a little smaller than a lab. She was about drowned by two coons she tried to run out of our creek. One jumped on her back and the other held her head under water. She put up a regal fight but, had I not run them off with a shotgun, I believe she would have been killed. She was bloodied from nose to tail. They also carry rabies so I advise trying to remove them from your property.

Hello, If your beagle corners the coon, then he will kill your dog find someone to trap them or just don't let your dog out at night alone.

I admit I am not an expert in what racoons are capable of, but I remember reading or hearing a long time ago that a full grown racoon can rather easily drown a dog if it can get it into deep enough water. Apparently, they know how to do this by instinct.

If one lives in a residential area - shooting them is frowned upon. So that leaves trapping (and I think all of us are referring to "humane traps") It is not difficult to release an animal safely for both the trapper and trappee (or dispatch them if need be) using these traps. *IF* the raccoon has rabies - allowing him to run free isn't a very good idea, either.....

Chuck, please tell me you were never a part of something like that!

Good heavens NO! Matter of fact, the practice sort of went underground after a bit, like dog fighting has. I was in my early teens at the time, didn't have a coondog, it was one of those novelty things, held out on one of the many, many strip mine ponds where I lived at the time.
I really don't think that many folks cared much for the event--no winner in that deal--at best the dogs got chewed up pretty bad before the coon was killed.
I just used the experience as an example of how adept coons are at defending themselves against dogs.
