After reading the Importing from MI thread something came up.
If you are going to sell something to a person in the US. Find out from your bank the best method of payment. I sold some NASCAR tickets & was paid w/ a USPS money order. CIBC doesn't deal w/ them so I had to go to Western Union. Cashing fee was brutal. If it had been a bank/credit union cheque or money order, my bank would've cashed it no problem (& no fee).
I was paid for some services this summer w/ a US credit union cheque & it was just like cashing a normal cheque. There may be a hold on the funds, but no charges to me.

A couple years ago I bought a book online from England and used an 'international money order' bought at the USPS. Perhaps if you are selling something to a US buyer you could request payment this way. The regular money order from the USPS is called a domestic money order and shouldn't have been used. Unless the laws have changed this may be an option for you.

If you had used an International Money Order from the USPS it could be cashed at a Canada Post Office.

I have used Bank Deposit to pay for something in Australia. This is via paper or was then
But where both parties have PayPal accounts, this is quite secure. Cost is proportional. Route is electronic.
I remember someone I bought from wanting another $ transfer system in a network where I had always used PayPal. I asked my bank. They said, we know PayPal, insist on PayPal.
You might ask your bank for the comparative security and costs of various financial networks.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

USPS money order clears same as a check. If my bank would not take it as a deposit like other checks they would no longer be my bank.

Smkettner:
You didn't see that the person getting the US postal money order lives in CANADA ? And that it was a US domestic money order, ONLY cashable in the USA ?
A USPS "international money order " is cashable " outside of the USA ". That is what the sender SHOULD have used, but didn't.
A Canadian bank is quite wihin their rights to refuse to cash a 'US domestic postal money order " .
Details, details, details.

jimbunting, OP also says the bank takes a USD denominated personal check just fine. If they take a USD personal check and not a USPS check that would annoy me enough to bank elsewhere. I understand they might be well within their rights and I am not aware of specific restrictions USPS might have on how it is cashed. Western Union somehow got it done with a payday loan shark fee.
