South Texas is warm and active and quite reasonable with the dollar.

Oh, your poor man. There's too much see without a firm plan. Fuel stops? There's fuel everywhere. Can't imagine your wife on the first wagon train ride to the great, unexplored West. As the title of a recent movie suggested, "There Will Be Blood!"

Bang on! Now South Texas sounds kind of vague. Kind of like when folks ask us if we no so & so in Canada? Uh. Could you perhaps give us province as starter?
So, what's a fav place for you to direct tourists to?
Thanks,
Kevin

FWIW, our first winter we put 16,000 miles on our truck & trailer all the way between Death Valley to the Florida Panhandle before heading home. Our longest stay in any one spot was 8 days and we were both in our mid 50s. Had a blast, saw a lot of things & country new to us.

We started wintering at 53 six years ago and left each time without a plan other than to head south and west and mostly stay off the interstate and to eat in mom and pop restaurants when we ate out. Have found many interesting places and kept warm. Personally, we don't like a fixed agenda and prefer being spontaneous so that we don't have a schedule to adhere to...isn't that what retirement is about?

You're way too young to be plunking yourselves down at one place all winter. What are your interests? There are so many things to see and do if you just wander around. Head south until you're warm enough , stay until you're bored with that area and move to the next warm area.Your plan sounds great to me!

If you come this far you will not be concerned about road closures due to snow.

Got to second the smaller area towns in AZ rather than the big ones. Bisbee is also one not to miss. If you like wine check out Sonoita. In TX San Antonio is also a good place to go - lots in the area to do and see. Much of it will depend on your interests. Stop in at the state tourism offices which are usually close to the borders and get all their brochures. And have a wonderful trip!

Sorry, wasn't meant as a snobbish comment in anyway. We've just saved our pennies and we're going to give this a try. Who knows, maybe it won't be for us, but it worth a shot.
Cheers,
Kevin
