Special dispensation had to be made to allow I-70 to cross those two places with 7% grades. It wasn't feasible to build the highway using the 6% required. And these aren't short sections of 7%. The one on the west side of Vail Pass reads 7% grade next 7 miles.

Im not sure but I think there are some other interstates that have short sections of 7%. The Mountain Directory might list them. I tossed mine in the trash. Maybe I should have keep it as it was good for a good laugh now and then.

6%% 7% ?????????

Let's not get hung up on that! If you can do 6% you probably can do 7%. Many of us have pulled steeper than that on non interstates if we have to.

The highway is good, the tunnel is no big deal. Use one gear lower going down that you did going up. And watch out for the crazies!

Be safe.

Being a flat lander myself I found my first trip taking this route was something that got my attention. I got used to it while spending 2 weeks in the mountains, including the "Million Dollar HWY" to Silverton. My white knuckled DW never got used to it. My favorite Tshirt from CO says "Real men don't need gaurd rails"

T shirt might be cute but not real good when it comes to tight curves and an RV.

We did that route in midmay two years ago except in opposite direction. We have a Dodge 2500 cdt and 32' Montana with combined weight of 19,000#. Absolutly no problem up or down. Just pay attention and use trucks gears. Enjoy the ride.

4runnerguy & cm are CORRECT! Skip is WRONG! I have driven this route and that is really the only location of concern IF it does not SNOW. If it snows, all bets are off. I would not pull my 5er West over the Rockies in the snow. Good luck!

Much ado about nada. Gazillions of all kinds of rigs from D to Moab all day all year. Just pay attention to what you're doing.

My family and I will be traveling from Flagstaff AZ to Denver CO. next summer. We will come up toward Moab and get on I-70 west of Grand Junction. My question is, we have a 30' Dutchman (8k lbs) and pulling it with an F-250 Ford Super Duty with just stock brakes on both trailer and truck. I'm a little concerned about the mountain range simply because I have never driven that area. Will we have much problem pulling across I-70? I'm not sure how to figure the 7% grade everyone is talking about.

Thanks for your help.
