On an upcoming trip to Williamsburg, we are going to try to make a day trip over to Monticello. Two questions- The best road to take, and if anybody knows of any local spot where we can get a good breakfast along the way. We figure on leaving the Williamsburg campground around 7 a.m. Thanks for any help you all can give.

There are several roads across Virginia from Williamsburg to Charlottesville that you can take. Do you want fast or scenic. That is a very scenic part of Virginia. So look at an atlas and see the distance and which type of road you wish to take. I wouldn't try it for a daytrip as there is a lot to see after Monticello. Madison's home is in the same neighborhood.
We took a back road and found a museum of the Walton's Mountain TV series in Rockfish that was very interesting as well as the historical homes we had visited. It made the trip a most interesting day.
Enjoy your visit, but plese try to make it more than a daytrip to get the most out of your time and effort.

If your route is on the US 60 bypass and near the Kingsgate Green shopping center, drop in and have breakfast at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Williamsburg.

Thanks for the replies. We were just doing a day trip at this time to check it out. We are planning a lengthier return to that area in the future, but are just scouting it out at this time. We have also found that more than 4 or 5 days straight in Williamsburg without a break gets to be monotonous (sp?) for us.

I had looked at the atlas and have some options laid out, was just wondering if somebody else had done that trip and knew of roads to avoid, or "must see" roads. We will be doing 'scenic' on the way to Monticello, and 'quickest' on the way back in the late afternoon/evening.

For breakfast we were thinking more along the lines of a local eatery rather than Cracker Barrrel, or some other chain. Was hoping somebody who lived local in one of the towns along the way had a favorite spot.

Williamsburg has a number of locally owned restaurants that specialize in breakfasts. All are good so just pick one you think you will like.

To get to Monticello from Williamsburg, the easiest route is just to follow I-64 west. It will take you about 2 hours or so. If you hit Richmond at rush hour it might take longer. 64 will hook up with I-95 for a short distance. You can also take I-295 around the north side of Richmond and pick 64 back up on the west side.

A scenic alternative from Williamsburg to Richmond is to follow state route 5 along the river. This is a two lane route that passes many of the old plantations that were in operation when this area was being settled. Once you get to Richmond, pick up state route 6 and continue west until you pick up state route 20. 20 will take you near Monticello. Other than having to deal with Richmond itself, this is a fairly scenic route most of the way.

Have lunch at Michie's Tavern, just before Monticello. Great food and reasonable. Pronounced "Mickie's" like the mouse.

The routes that "hokiehall" suggested are the ones I would pick also. Enjoy your day. But remember you won't want to go home so soon, after you've seen only one of the many things to see in that area.

Get to Rt5, nice ride, you can check out the Plantations along the way and come up to 295, cross over to 288...come around the South/West side of Richmond... this will set you up to go out rt60, rt6 or 250 up to C'vlle.
We do all of our cooking so I can't really suggest a place for brkfast....although....
We are in the area of 295 and 95 on the North side of Richmond... ya'll are welcome to stop by for some sausage gravy and biscutts.(just don't tell my wife who sent ya!!)...LOL....do a search on the local resturants if something is of intrest to you PM me and I will ask around to see if anyone has been there....

Coming back... I would do 64 east to 295 around the North side of Richmond...go past the 64 east exit and pick up rt60 east which will bring you right into Wlmsburg...I try to avoid 64 east from Richmond to VA Beach as much as possible traffic has gotten really bad..especially closer to Wlmsburg.
Also... if you make it back to the Wlmsburg are for dinner....and like BBQ...make a side trip off 60 to get to Pierces BBQ.... good stuff.

We stopped at Michie's for lunch after Monticello in June of 2008. Can't say I agree with that recommendation, but maybe it was my expectations were all wrong about the tavern. It's essentially a buffet of warming trays for lunch, had a cafeteria feel to it. Hardly what I expected in a historic tavern, felt more like a visit to a Disneyworld restaurant, than a tavern. Later in the trip, we had some excellent meals at taverns around Gettysburg to the north, dinning experiences we were expecting at Michie's.
