Hi all!
I have Llasha Apso who is 6 years old. She seems to be putting weight on. We feed her 1 cup per day and 3 milk bones a day but no people food. She eats lamb and rice because she is allergic to beef and chicken. Purina one does not make a reduced fat for her. The question is after all this, is there a dog food that is low in fat and that she can eat. I am retired so the cost of her food I need to take in consideration. Before I hear about if yu love your dog you will not worry abou cost she is the love of my life but money only goes so far. So I am asking for your understanding and your help.

California Natural has a Reduced Fat, Lamb and Rice. A 15lb bag cost about $26.00. Measuring a cup a day, should last a long time.
An alternative is to add green beans to her food. The green beans will take the place of the reduced/reduction volume of the food you feed her.

Hi,
I was feeding Solid Gold brand dog food to my dogs, and they got into great health. I don't know if they are selling in the north east yet though.
They do have a lamb and rice kind, and sell it in 40 pound bags. The bag is sealed so the food does not spoil. There is also a vitamin that can be put on the food as well, something made with seaweed?
MOst dog foods use a lot of fillers, sadly Purina has more by-products than product in it's dog food.
You might want to place a wanted add on Craigslist.com and ask for 8.5 PH drinking water for your pet. Usually they will give you free samples for a month, so you can see if it is doing any good. Great for humans too, it will help anyone with allergies.

Thank you all for your ideas and help. Mandy walks about one mile in the am before breakfast and mile after supper.She goes to get the mail mid afternoon. We are campers and she is a great campe she loves to go for walks, new smell are great. But she is very laid back. Maybe I am just being a worried doh owner, When we get to Florida she has a vet appointment so until then I will cut her food down very slow.

We also have a dog that tends to put on weight. No matter what you feed, just reduce it. Too much food equals overweight. Reduced weight food just adds more filler so you can give more bulk with less calories. Bottom line is that is it all about calories. Just give less than the cup a day.

It can be very hard to get the weight off. I recently adopted a morbidly obese Heeler mix. She needs to lose 20 pounds! I don't know how she got so fat because she barely eats anything. The vet wanted me to feed her 3 cups of diet S/D dog food, but she was only eating a cup a day. She wasn't losing any weight at all. I'm now feeding a non-diet kibble, one cup per day, and adding a half cup of 50/50 mix of chicken and mixed veggies. I buy the frozen veggies with no onions. The dogs think they are getting a big treat PEOPLE FOOD!, but it's so much less calories that Sandy is finally losing weight - down three pounds!

The exercise idea is the key. Even if you cut back on the food, w/out exercise, the body goes into storage mode and the metabolism shuts down. Also, cut out the milkbones, or at least cut down to one a day, divided into two pieces. They are the "junkfood" of the dog world. I would also just feed less of a quality kibble than a diet dogfood, which is mainly filler. Natural Balance makes a lamb kibble for allergy prone dogs, which is a good one. It's at Petco in my area.
It can be done, but it's hard. I once had a lab that seemingly lived on air! We feed him little and took him on long daily walks, but weight was always a struggle for him. You can only do the best you can. Good luck!

Do you and your dog get enough exercise? Yep. Jane walks our dog (German Shepherd) at least a mile each morning and I take her for a run alongside my electric scooter each day. I'm unable to run or walk any distance myself so the scooter really gives the dog a workout.
