Hi all! My DH is having a difficult time finding a cpap mask that is comfortable. He's had the cpap for five years now and is happy when he's comfortable. His main complaint with all the masks tried so far is that a few hours after he falls asleep...the mask starts to hurt the bridge of his nose. So...he doesn't get as good a rest as he should. He's thinking about trying the nasal pillow version that you hold with your teeth. Has anyone tried that? How'd it work for you? Any OTHER suggestions would be great! He's been to a few cpap user groups before...and didn't find that very satisfactory. It can get expensive to try out masks...if they don't work you're out the money anyway. We're currently in the Orlando area if anyone can recommend a specific place to go.
Thanks for the help! cts

My DW also has been using CPAP for several years. She uses a "nasal pillow" instead of the full mask. This thing consists of a thing that goes under the nose and has straps that go over the head to hold it in place. She started with the nasal pillow and has never used a mask, but she says the pillow does not cause any discomfort.

I too switched from the nose hose to the nasal pillow version, it has similar head straps to hold it in place. Not sure about the teeth thing... The nasal pillow did take a while to get used to, but I wouldn't go back to the old mask.

I just re read your post and noticed you mentioned holding the nasal pillow with your teeth. That is not the case with what my wife uses, there is nothing that goes in your mouth. I have never tried hers on since I don't use CPAP, but I think if you were to make a fist and put two knuckles up against your nostrils, that would give you some idea what this thing feels like.

My husband uses the pillows and finds them much better than the mask due to the same problem your husband has. I use a bipap but because the pressures are very high I was told by my doctor that pillows weren't an option, but I am not sure if that is the case for all. (I have a pressure of 19/5). Don't know if this helps or not.

Between my lite sleeping and the masks not fitting my wife's face she has tried about 6 different types so we can both get a good nights sleep. The nasal pillow made sores on her nose, others leaked with every movement of her head or hurt her nose. After months of trying different types we found the FlexiFit 432 made by Fisher & Paykel. It's a soft mask that for her does not leak, fits well and is comfortable. After 3 weeks of use both of us are happy and sleeping great!!

I've tried several, including the pillows, but found the Mirage Activa by Res Med to work the best. I switch every few weeks with the standard Ultra Mirage so that the contact points on my face get some relief, since I use the CPAP religiously.
The Mirage Activa has a inflatable part between the mask and the soft seal on the face that pretty much prevents leakage and allows for quite a bit of movement.
The place I get my masks and equipment from has a 30 day return policy. I'm assuming it is required by our FDA as a regulated and licensed Durable Medical Equipment provider.
Several of my friends use the nasal pillows and love them, but they just didn't work for me.
On edit, I found the correct name for the mask I use regularly to be the Mirage Activa, while I thought it was the Ultra Mirage. Sorry.

I used the swift II but changed to another type that is a nasal pillow but the feeder hose is in the middle of the pillow. the straps are more comfortable and it just fits better than the swift II. If any one wants to know the model number or style, email me and I will go to the other end of the house and find out the exact model for you.

The mask inquestion is a CPAPPro (www.nomask.com). This system uses a mouth appliance (boil & bite mouthpiece) to hold the nasal connection in place. Seems to be feasable, looking into purchasing at a later date.
At present I use a Mirage Quatro FF. Have for two years. Had problems with the bridge of the nose myself. Used small round bandaids for a while. Usually does not bother me now.

my first mask was a comfort gel which looks like the first one here. I didn't like the stuff on the forehead. my latest mask is the other one pictured here. my only complaint is that I really need a mask that has a lower strap around the back of the head. I frequently have to tug the strap down in back on the two nasal pillow ones that I have.
will have to look at the one mentioned that you bite on.
just googled it, looks interesting. sez you don't have to bite on it to hold it in, form it to fit and stay on uppers. think I will try it next time.
