Currently we own a 27 ft fifth wheel. Considering "upgrading" to a motorhome class A or C....Would like opinions/facts on Class A (our preference) or Class C and opinions/facts on diesel or gas. We use our camper for weekend trips and vacations to mountains twice a year.

If the extra expense of a diesel isn't a problem, diesel is the way to go. It will outlast a gas engine and outperform it also in mountains. With you being a casual camper, weekends and a vacation, a class C would be great. Easier to park, and just better all around to take care of your needs.

I have always had Class As myself. I have looked at Cs and would have gotten the storage/TV stuff up front instead of bed so no advantage over an A there. I'm way too old to climb up there and very few Cs have a N/S bed and that would be a horrible nuisance IMHO. that is one reason I would get a Truck camper with an extended overhang instead of a C myself.
the only reason I considered a diesel A at one point was that I was thinking of towing a car on a trailer with a boat above and would need the capacity of a diesel. for just touring on the interstate my gasser works just fine.

I could give you MANY reasons for being pro-DP. But, most would be disputed by those who don't know better......

We have had cab-over, Class C, Class A gasser and now Class A DP. I consider each change (they were in that order) an upgrade. We do pull a tow vehicle and sometimes enclosed trailer so the DP power is very nice.
With DP's there are generally more bells and whistles - which I like. We have larger holding tanks (fresh, gray and black) which is important to us for dry camping. Generator is also essential for dry camping and the diesel ones are often more powerful and quieter plus more fuel efficient. Double pane windows are great for summer and winter; insulation they provide does make a difference. The visibility out the windshield in a Class A is fantastic especially in the mountains. Driving the Icefield Parkway (is that what it's called) thru Banff and Jasper is magnificent. Most DP's have the passenger door which is inconvenient when fueling up as passenger must get out of the way (this is really true for us since I installed a 'drawer' on dash which holds my laptop). On the other hand DP has big fuel tank so we have 1000 mile range.
Agree with Bumpyroad about climbing into bed in a Class C; I'm too old. However, our Class C had that corner bed in back which we used. It was a pain to make up (since it had walls on 3 sides) and there was the climbing over or being climbed over by the person next to the outside who needed to get up at night.

There are pros and cons for each. I've owned both and have enjoyed both. When the kids were little the class C with bunks worked out great, especially when traveling. It was small enough that we didn't need a toad. Now, we have a class A and enjoy the additional space.
A class C may be slightly better for the mountain roads.
Look at both and imagine what it would be like for you.

one word of warning, when you ask these C vs A questions, be sure the responses truly reflect the difference "between" the types, not opinions just based on smaller size, turning radius, etc. of a C.
Oh, and my puny anemic gas Class A has 4,100 lbs. of carrying capacity. when I looked at one Newmar a few years back, the basic model was on a puny chassis with less oomph than my gasser, the upgraded model was on a real DP chassis so be sure to check that out.

Your asking for facts, but you haven't stated what your intended use is as far as time you be using it a year, number of peeps that will be with you. How far you will be traveling when you do go. All kinds of things will help use tell some of the pro's and cons. Most of use have seen people happy full timing out of the back of pick up trucks, with tents and camp stove, to Semi Tractor trucks with 55' trailers converted to look like and apartment house with hot tub and sun decks. It's all in what your looking for and the monies you wish to invest. Like you can by a Deluxe DP, and find that you could have have bought Two Deluxe Gasoline jobs for the same price. It wouldn't be the same coach nor the same ride but like I said, it's all in what you want spend and what you want to spend it one.
In the mean time your getting opinions of what people have found was good for them. But most likely not good for someone else. Get out, go around to some of the Dealers and take a look, as to drive one or two. See the difference then figure on what you can live without. JM2Cents Bill

I looked at both of them too and picked a Class A because most of the Class C's had a big step between the driver/passenger area up front to get to the back. Also some Class A's or C's are harder to get into if you have arthritis or any other disability. Check out that and how easy it is to access the outside storage. Also how accessible are things inside? We bought a 2002 Winnebago Brave 35' because it was easy for me to get into and out of, the bed had access on both sides so we weren't climbing over each other. Look too at your inside storage in the kitchen and bedroom. How are you going to use the kitchen?

If I was going to downgrade from the fifth wheel I'd likely go with the Super C but I'm a diesel over gas guy for heavy duty engine useage.
That said it all comes down to floor plans and what your comfortable with. For weekends and vacations to mountains I'm not sure I'd go the expense of a diesel pusher but it would come down to what sort of deal I could make.
