2003 Dodge 2500 Cummins 6 speed. With carpet kit and topper around 19-20 mpg. The trip I did last week with the Outfitter Apex 8 and pulling a driftboat 1600 miles trip average was 15mpg. Lots of interstate driving at 70mph...which hurt milage. Driving over Lolo pass to Orofino, ID helped mileage a bunch. Slow winding road (150 plus miles)and 50mph is probably our average speed on this stretch.

Anyone with a newer diesel (2004 & up) and a bigfoot or Northern Lite (1400lb range)? I have been thinking of selling our Montana van and upgrading to a diesel for the TC and using the TC as a daily vehicle. I would save on upkeep of the extra vehicle ($couple hundred a year), insurance ($500 per year), license ($75 per year), etc.

The Montana averages 20 mpg so nothing great. We use the car for most of the running around. Also would help to clean up the driveway. I use the TC a lot so taking it off would not be a good thing on me or my marriage.

Comparing apples to oranges cannot be done without mentioning your gear ratio and whether you have a 4 x 4. My earlier post left those out. I have a 4.11 differential ratio on my '08, 4 x 4, F-450. Of course the bigger the truck the lower the mileage. What I am glad of is I did not buy the first F-450 I looked at as the gear ratio was 4.88. What were those salesmen thinking? I was going to haul logs out of the woods? They were pressure salemen, but after the test drive, and asking them if they would changeout the gears to 4.10, or is it 4.11 (?), I never went back to that dealer. Too much pressure and I did not need a 4.88.

I've only checked a couple of times but my 8.1 got ~8.5 with a mix of freeway at 70 and 2-lanes at 60. Pulling a 2500# trailer dropped it to ~8. It's 4x4, not a dually and hauling a 4000 camper. You'll probably be close to that. I have 4.10 gears but I think that's all you could get with the 8.1 unless it was a 3/4 ton.
