A friend of mine wants to get a diesel truck to pull his TT. Today we looked at several trucks all crew cab like he wants them, here is the list
2005 f350 dually fx4 lariat 168k $18,900
2005 2500 chevy duramax 4x4 120k $19,900
2004 2500 chevy duramax 2wd 113k $17,900
2004 f350 not dually fx4 lariat 108k $18,900
2002 f250 7.3 lariat 4x4 188k $16,900
2006 f250 2wd 120k $22,900
My questions are,
How much more mileage can i get from a diesel vs a gas truck?
we looked at a 2004 chevy 2500 6.0 gas with less miles than all of them and it was priced at $13000, why so much difference?
My wife and i would like to have a diesel truck also but right now i will keep my v10 xcursion (for a few long years), but if i decide to buy a diesel now like my friend is doing what should i look for?
I know about body conditions , tires, etc.. but i do not know so much about diesel.
What do you think?

You will get close to 300K on the Dmax's, -100K miles on the 03-06 Fords (I would stay away from the 6.0l Powerstrokes. Read up on them) The 6.0 gas should last 180K. Out of all of those(without knowing the weight of the trailer), I would go with the 05 Dmax. Plus, the Dmax will get you about 4 mpg better on average over the 6.0 gasser.

Modern gas engine will easily go 200,000+ mi.
I have 223,000, and counting on my 1997 Blazer. Still runs like new. To this day, I still change the oil at 5000mi because it isn't dirty before that point.
My mom has over 300,000mi on her 1996 GMC Yukon's original enigne, and NOBODY is harder on a vehicle than she is. 
I would say that 300,000mi+ on any truck, and the other parts of said truck will be used up even if the engine isn't.

To start, a diesel truck, with AT, will cost 7 to 10 thousand more than a gas powered truck with manual trans.
The lower the milage, you usually will pay more for that truck, but when vehicles reach 100,000 plus miles, they take a bigger hit. The popular notion is that after 100,000 miles you should expect more problems, plus other truck components start to ware out due to the miles.
The only thing that is a fact, when you have engine problems with a diesel engine, expect to pay more $$$ than your gas driven truck.
But if you intend to purchase a used diesel truck, find out what engine it has, and research it's history, as some engines had major problems in there design.

A late model diesel engine should go 300K without a problem.
Some claim the rest of the truck won't last that long. That maybe true in some cases but my 2001 7.3 F 250 has 215k and is running strong.
The new DPF equipped diesel trucks are a bit more expensive when purchased new vs.there gas counterparts. However diesels generally retain their resale value more than their gas counterpart.
Any premium paid up front can be re-couped at resale with a diesel engine

I truly detest our FORDS (E-250's) because of the sensor issues and spark plug blow outs, BUT, the one I drive every work day is OVER 280,000 now and still runs like a clock (of course the check engine light is ALWAYS on - I've just ignored it for the last 180,000 miles - I reset it at inspection time each year - it comes back on within a month) - but I am aggressive with engine oil maintenance and change oil and filter every 3000 to 6000 miles without fail - I'd drive it anywhere (and do) We usually sell 'em at 300,000 miles (still running)
Somebody out there must have some really bad diesels. The old FORDs easily got 400,000 miles out of the block barring anything catastrophic. 'Course, you had to shut them off to talk to anyone because of the noise... I'm expecting "AT LEAST" a half millions miles out of our CUMMINS in our RV.
For no other reason than to get the CUMMINS, I'd buy a Dodge. I'd say it's closer to 25 % minimum better mileage than a gas engine and MUCH longer life.

The main criteria for using and owning a diesel truck should not be gas mileage alone. If you pull in the hills or mountain areas, the difference in pulling torque and power is amazingly better.
I will try not to be brand specific prejudice so check to see what your cost on maintenance will be, considering 5000 mile oil changes.
Ford Oil capacity is 17qts with filter.
Dodge $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 11qts with filter
Chevy duramax $$$$$$ 10qts with filter
Yes repairs on diesels are more expensive, but less frequent than
the gasolines counterparts as a general rule.
As stated diesel resale is much higher, longevity much longer.
Ok I tryed not to but, check and see how many 18 wheelers and large
class A motorhomes use the CUMMINS engine. I rest my case.

FWIW Our 2001 7.3 Diesel Excursion gets 16.5 mpg, mixed highway and city driving.

All of those trucks have very high mileage for their ages and high prices too. I would not choose any of them.
