Hi: I'm struggling to find a lightweight TT (5000 lb GVWR) with a hard slide (no canvas) that'll fit in my garage (22' long and 10' high if garage door is modified). The best prospect is a Rockwood Roo 21RS Hard Slide, but it'll exceed 10' high after A/C is added. The Jay Feather Sport 199 will fit, but I don't like the floorplan (no dinette). A few other nice TT's are 1-2 feet too long. This has caused me to wonder -- is it possible to change the hitch on any TT to a "folding hitch" to decrease storage length? How much do they cost and how much length will they save (since propane bottles still on front)? Somebody here told me Trail Manor offers them, and so I was wondering if they can be put on any TT.

Thanks!
Gary

I am not sure if I've ever seen a "folding hitch", I am interested in the replies. Have you looked at Forest River Surveyor TTs? Depending on the model, they use the torsion bar suspension which makes for a much lower trailer. It is a trade off, because you have to be more aware of your ground clearance with the lower trailer.

The two folding hitches I've seen were limited to 5,000 lb. trailers. I know they are expensive, but theTrailmanor seems to have what you want, including standard folding hitch.

A hitch is attached to the TV. The tounge is attached to the TT. You are refering to a swing away or folding tounge. Many bass boat trailers have this feature. They sell them in RV catalogs. I am not sure what the weight limit is. It may void your frame warranty.

HiLo has two 2010 models with an optional detachable tongue. Both the 1810H and 2310H have them. They reduce the length by about two feet.

A bolt on tongue could be fabricated. Replacing all tubing with thicker wall tubing, some 5/8" tapping plates. Bolt together with 4 5/8" grade 8 bolts on each side.

Could be done but good luck finding some one capable that's willing.

Would it be possible instead to modify the garage door to close around the tongue?

Might be easier than making the tongue fit inside the garage...

I'm also going to chime in on your height limitation... I'm not sure that even if you get the length down, that you'll find a TT that comes in under your 10' height limitation...

As was mentioned, a really good welding / frame shop could probably come up with at suitably braced, detachable tongue assembly. I can envision a sleeve and plate affair using grade 8 bolts. Might be a pain in the butt to put on and take off, but, you might be able to "live" with it if you don't go out frequently. If you tend to go "on the spur of the moment", you will probably get tired of the effort to get it ready to "go". You are still going to be limited in floor plans...if you look at most TTs, the removable part of the tongue is really rather limited once you get the battery and LPG tanks in place. If you figure a couple of feet for those, you are still limited to about a 19' box and most of the hard framed TTs are still going to present you a problem in height...

As opposed to looking at modifying the door to the garage, if you can swing the height issue, I'd look at a "bump out" back on the garage. I did this once on my garage at our old house. Had a 23' Eldorado that I needed to get into a 22' garage. Just bumped out the back on one side and had a perfect fit.
