Planning on buying a new TH sometime soon. My last unit was a 21' TT and I had a gas chevy truck with two tanks. Now I have a 3/4 chevy w/ 6.6 diesel and only 26 gal. tank. Pulling say a 30' TH I figure my milage will drop in half, so I plan on a second tank. How do you guys figure fuel stops? Do you use truck stops? I know pulling into some of the stations that have diesel, it's a challenge just trying to figure which pump has diesel.

With your small tank, I'd plan on every 150 miles or so. That'd be about three hours or there abouts. Pumps will read DIESEL and almost all of them will be GREEN although some gas pumps have green nozzles. Just be careful.JMHO

With a diesel, the mileage drop won't be as dramatic as with a gasser. I have a B, but my policy is to drive off the top of the tank and not even try to get into a station that doesn't make it obvious where the diesel pumps are. My favorite stop has a big green sign that says, "This row, DIESEL ONLY".

We have the same truck and also pull a 31 footer.
Tow all over the place and have had no real problems pulling in and getting out for fueling.

Just "scope" it out before you pull in and don't let your tank get almost empty before you start looking.

I run with the quarter tank rule..

Never planned a fuel stop in my life. When I NEED fuel I stop and buy it. If one station has fuel for two cents per gallon cheaper than another, GUESS which one I use When prices are the SAME I've avoid truck stops MOST of the time since they're just WAY to busy. With only a 58 foot rig there are few fuel stations that I can't use easily. When I've using the F-150 to tow, it has a 35 gallon tank and the diesel has 38 so fuel stops aren't all that frequent.

I use mostly truck stops when the unit is hooked up. If I am camping and see a good price at a local station and the truck is unhooked I fuel. Once you have the additional tank you will feel better. It does give you a lot of options.

I try to plan fuel stops with the lunch stop. So if I leave 8 to 9a I need fuel and lunch at the same time. Makes for a longer and more restful stop. By the time that fuel is gone I am pulling into camp. If it will be a long drive I start at 5a and stop at 8/9a and then again at noonish. I prefer dinner at camp and not on the road. My range is 170 to 200 miles.

It never hurts to throw a 5gal can of diesel in the back of the truck until you get some miles on it towing and have a better feel of what kind of range you will have with the factory tank. Having that can in the back makes it a bit less stressful when you have to pass up a station or two and are at 1/4 tank or less.
