Typical practice. You are creating paperwork for them which will incur a cost. Unfair to pass that on to the rest of their customers, so they are going to charge you. Sounds reasonable to me if you are no longer going to have any policies with them.

No offense Joe, but that answer is full of nonsense. the reason they charged was to get one last dig. I have left many insurance companies when their fees got to high. I have never been charged any kind of fee. If someone claims that this fee is charged ask for their superior, never take it on their word.

The fee is charged and likely paid without question.

Kind of like the last time I had a problem with my satellite dish, they claimed a charge would be incurred for my problem, even though I had a service agreement, I never paid anything nor was I billed. Don't accept being pushed around.

By the way my S-I-L who is also named Joe is in insurance business and would agree with my assessment.

One saying that many in business tend to forget is "When you make someone happy they tell ten people, but make them mad and they tell 100". This holds true even when breaking of services.

Come-on D R who are you trying to kid… sure you changed if the rates were to high, and the rates change at renewal… when the fee would not apply anyway… generally if rates go up during a policy period it would be due to a claim, also covered in the contract… good luck getting a better rate somewhere else if claims caused a rate increase…

Contractual agreements, and contractual obligations have nothing to do with happy, but yes you should question them about fees, and often they will be waived, but there is little incentive for them to waive a fee for early termination of your contract…

what are you going to tell the 10 people, hey they are great, just way to expensive…

It is called a "short rate" cancellation rather than a "pro Rate" cancellation.

Some, not all, companies charge a "short Rate" cancellation fee of roughly 10% of the premium if you cancel mid term. Not too many companies practice this any longer but there are a few but all companies can use this cancellation procedure if they want to.

I would be upset too - and I think I would fight it to the point they would have to go to collections to get anything from me.

I really don't like that smiley face company at all - I'm sure if they just stopped sending out dump truck loads of junk mail to my house they wouldn't have to charge you that kind of malicious fee - and I'm NOT even a customer. The only sin I ever did was buy an RV and Sam's Halo has never left me alone since.

Oh noooooo! Do not go into collections! That just dings your credit rating and doesn't hurt anyone but you! If there's nothing in the small print that says they can charge a cancellation fee then take it up with your state AG. Each state has rules about what they allow. cts
