We are in Canada for a few weeks and it appears that there will be a temporary shortage of the vaccine. US news channels are also reporting a shortage. We are going to try and get a shot today. I wonder if the vaccine will be easily available in Mexico? The vaccine being given in Canada is not the same as in the USA. Ours does not contain the live virus. If any Canadians are planning on leaving in the next week where will you get your shot? I have noticed that hand sanitizer/wipes are everywhere in Canada: Home Depot, supermarkets, car dealerships and most government facilities. When the swine flu scare began I did see Mexicans taking extra precaucions. However that is not the case this fall. Because we live in the North of Mexico extra precaucions are necessary. In the winter months visiting our little village one almost needs a hazmat suit. Much of the population live in casas de carton with no heat source. There are caughing children everywhere! Before the swine flu I never worried about getting sick. We do get a seasonal flu shot and the worse that would happen was a cold. But this year is different.

You could always get your shot at Guantanamo. See the latest news blurb.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon will offer the H1N1 vaccination to detainees at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay, officials there said Friday.
The Pentagon made the decision based on U.S. government assessments that people held in detention facilities are at high risk for the pandemic, said Maj. Diana R. Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, which is in charge of holding the suspected terrorists.
"Detainees at JTF Guantanamo are considered to be at higher risk and therefore they will be offered the H1N1 vaccination," Haynie said.
"JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees. As such, we must provide detainees the medical care necessary to maintain their health," she said.
Base officials had not received the vaccinations and did not know when they were expected to arrive, Haynie said.
Once the vaccinations are received, doses will be administered to active-duty personnel before being offered to detainees and others on the base, Haynie said.
The vaccination is mandatory for all uniformed personnel, she said.
The vaccinations will be voluntary for the detainees, who will be briefed on the virus and the vaccine prior to deciding whether to receive the latter.
Some of the detainees have already voluntarily taken the seasonal flu shot, Haynie said.

There is a post on the Baja Forum, when the H1N1 vaccine becomes available in Mexico, you will not be allowed to have the H1N1 vaccine unless you have a certificate/paper proving you have already taken the regular seasonal Flu shot.

With everything you have said, might I suggest you visit Tucson or El Paso instead. There have been 7k deaths reported in Mexico from the H1N1. Also, as I recall the Govt. and our military (US) have suggested not to travel to Mexico due in part to the crime issue.

azishot,
We have many members who spend a lot of time in Mexico, several who reside there. With all due respect to the US State Department and the US military, I believe those members do a better job of keeping us aware.

There are two type of vaccines, the one with live virus is a spray up the nose, the shot form is not a live virus. I would think the same as in Canada. Last I called no H1N1 vaccine have gotten to Las Cruces yet.

So. AZ has NO or limited vaccine and AZ has one of the highest case counts in the USA. Per cap, AZ is the highest!

I am thinkng that Mexico will do a better job of dispensing the shots than Canada!! Just this week Canada anounced that there would be plenty of vaccine available. On Thursday they announced that there will be a shortage. Today we went to one of the clinics but only Priority One persons ( children, pregnant women, aboriginals and people with weakened immune systems under 55 will get the shots. The rest of us may have to wait more than a month. What a joke!!!

We're wrestling with the same issue - planning to leave BC within the next 2 weeks but it looks increasingly as though we will be leaving sans vaccinations. It shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone that trusting the gummit to manage this well hasn't worked out. We plan to stop in a clinic somewhere along the US west coast. The evil private enterprise system down there will likely have it sorted out. Ain't free healthcare wonderful?

AND remember it takes 10-14 days before the vaccine is effective. You don't get the shot and are protected the next day. It also important to get the Pneumonia Vaccine as 1/3 of the deaths are from Bacterial Pneumonia. The deaths are occurring form Pneumonia after the Swine Flu has weaken the Lungs.
