I went and looked at a 2004 chevrolet 2500 with the diesel yesterday. It had 84,000 miles on it. It looked like it was in excelent condition. I do not know much about diesels but when it was ideling, it was ejecting white smoke out of the exhaust. It was a constant stream and was fairly visable. Is this a problem? They wanted 15,500 for it.
Second part of the question, is 80,000 miles to much for a used diesel truck. I know this depends on how it was treated, but in most cases as a buyer, you don't really know how the vehicle was treated.
Any advice is appreciated.

80,000 miles is not much on a diesel if it has not been too abused. The smoking is not normal, might be a bad injector.

If I'm thinking correct, too much diesel would be black smoke. Blue smoke, oil. Thinking white smoke might be either transmission or radiator fluid being drawn inside the engine. Cracked head or defective vacumn modulator valve on the transmision ? Is this an auto or straight drive

Also.......
Injection timing that is too far retarded will allow more white smoke production for an extended period following a cold start because ignition temperature is controlled in part by injection timing. The engine will most likely run a little rough as well as exhibit lower power than normal. Check the injection timing first for an excessive white smoke problem. This check should include a test of the HPCA function. An inoperative HPCA solenoid due to an electrical problem or bad solenoid will produce an unusually large amount of white smoke while cold.

Also, could indeed be an injector leaking. Check the oil and see if its over full and smells like diesel. The injectors are a little pricey so be careful if your buying it

Like tvman44 says, this truck has a bad injector. I would stay away from it. There are other fish in the sea.

White smoke like you are describing sounds like an injector as mentioned above, or a headgasket (coolant). You could always get an inspection to find out for sure, but I think I would pass.

Problem child, run from this truck. People have a bad habit of programming these new diesels and running them into the ground and CRY when warranty's are voided or they have to many self inflicted problems with the motor ect. You may very well be buying or looking at a LEMON and where there is smoke you can bet you bottom dollar there is fire....

I wouldn't just reject the truck out of hand due to white smoke. I would drive it enough to get it fully warmed up, and see if it showed any signs of miss-firing or engine vibration. If I really liked the truck, and thought the price was right for my budget, I would be willing to pay to have it inspected at a competent diesel shop.
As for the mileage, my truck had 210,000 on it when I bought it. During the years and miles since, I have replaced tires, the alternator, and the serpentine belt.

At 84,000mi, and a 2004 model it sould still be under warranty, but just.
The idle smoke is not normal, and it does sound like an injector to me.
You may see if the owner would pay for 1/2 the diagnostic time, and have a Chevy garage check it out.
Other than that, it sounds like the price might be right.
