Just don't be afraid of the gas pedal and lower gears and you'll be fine.
We just went through there and spent some time. Towing 4600 lbs with a V-6 Nissan, no problem.

I live in Southern Virginia and have made a few trips to the mountains including Fancy Gap. If you get a chance you need to visit Douthat State Park, we really enjoyed it.

Within the Valley itself you should find it easy going. We were just up to the Homestead resort in our car but were checking out the roads and area for possible TT travel. No problems that I could see... except for one smallish tunnel on the Skyline Drive (Shenadoah National Park). Even U.S. 60 between Lexington and Richmond only had an "interesting" stretch of a few miles just east of Buena Vista; yet, we saw plenty of TT's and MH's tooling through the mountains. Ditto for the Skyline Drive itself. None of the grades were especially steep; nor the turns all that tight. State route 39 between Hot Springs (north of Covington on U.S. 220) and Lexington is an especially beautiful drive. Very light traffic and magnificent scenery. Enjoy Virginia.... and think upon the fact that 400 years ago, this was the cutting edge of the New World!!!

I went from Front Royal VA to Ashville NC through Sky Line Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway pulling 4000 lb with my Chevy 4.3 V6 with no problems. Speed limit is 45 mph or less very nice drive.

One of our favorite campgrounds is Jellystone Luray. We tow a 318BHS Spree 31ft trailer with our Expedition which has the 5.4 Ford engine and 3.7 gearing. Our route takes us over the Thornton Gap which is the pass between Luray and Warrenton on US 211.
The passes seem to me to be very steep. I just take it easy and use the lower gearing. There are usually passing lanes for ascending traffic. On the way down I usually put it in 2nd or 3rd and let the engine breaking do most of the work. These are VERY steep VERY twisty passes, so don't be hurried and take you're time.
I've found Google Earth to be excellent. If you turn on terrain you can pan and tilt to get a good view of the road up the mountains. Turn on the street view and most of these passes have been -pictured- by a google earth van that takes 360 degree pictures every 10 seconds or so, so you can get a street level view of the road.
