The left brake light on my toad no longer works when towing. I have a 98 National Tradewinds and tow an 07 Saturn Vue. The RV has separate lights and the toad has combined lights. Camping World installed the Roadmaster Brite Lite converter to take the separate turn signal and brake lights from the RV and convert them to a combined wire for the toad. They also installed 2 of the Hy Power diodes in each of the brake light housings on the Vue.

Yesterday, neither the left turn signal or brake light worked on the Vue while towing. I checked the wiring harness between the vehicles and found that the wire powering the left turn/brake was loose at one end. I repaired it, and the left turn signal now works while towing. What I can't figure out is why the left brake light won't work. The same wire carries both the turn signal and brake light, so if the turn signal works, the wiring must be o.k. I tested the wiring harness while attached to the RV, and my multimeter indicated that both the left turn and the brake signals were working, so the Brite Lite coverter appears to be o.k. - the trouble would seem to be in the toad wiring, but again, its only one wire carrying both signals.

All of the lights work properly on both vehicles when they are not attached.

Any ideas? Could the Brite Lite converter only be allowing enough amps through to cause my mulitmeter to indicate 12V, but not enough to light the brake light? I'm not much of an electrician, and appreciate any help I can get.

I finished installing tail lights on my toad this weekend. I used the bulb
and socket method but I also had to use a converter (Hopkins). Everything
works great.
I'm not an electrician but it seems to me your problem must be a bad converter.
I have never heard of these things going bad. If you get it fixed, please give us an update on what the problem was.

Did you check the signal from the coach brake to the converter?

You didn't mention how long ago it was you had CW do the install, but I would head back to get it corrected.

CW did the install about 6 years ago - no recourse there. I didn't check the brake wire leading to the converter, since my multimeter indicated that 12v was reaching the wiring harness between the RV and the toad. Today I rigged a 12v test light to the left brake wire at the toad end of the wiring harness, and sure enough, even though the multimeter registered 12v in the wire the light didn't come on. So my assumption now is that a circuit in the converter has gone bad and allows enough amperage thru to register on the multimeter, but not enough to light a 12v bulb. I've ordered a new converter, should be here tomorrow. I'll write an update after installing and testing it.

Problem solved! It was the converter. Just installed the new one this afternoon and all lights are working again.
