I just purcgased a diesel pusher and will be flat towing my 2008 Chevy Silverado 4WD. I read the manual about how to place the transfer case into the neutral position. The book then says to place the shift selector in park prior to moving the vehicle. Won't this have the effect of locking the front wheels? Does anyone have any experience with this who could straighten me out?

the owner's manual should have "straightened you out". So you are going to ignore their advice and take a crapshoot off the internet?

If you look under your truck, you will see the front differential is connected to the transfer case. When the transfer case is placed in neutral, the front wheels are no longer connected to the drive line and are then turning freely.

Bumpy,

I intend to follow what the owners manual says I need to do. My question isn't how to disengage the drive train. I know what the owners manual describes will unlock the drive wheels both front and rear. My question deals with the front wheels having the ability to turn left and right while the truck is being towed. I'm sorry I didn't make that clearer.

If I leave the shift selector in neutral, then I can only turn the key back to the accessory position. In that position it leaves battery flowing to things like the radio, etc. Three or four hours down the road I'm going to have two dead batteries(on the truck), not to mention any of the other systems (ABS, odometer, etc.) that will be registering.

My question is if I place the shift selector in the Park position, but leave the key in the ignition, will it allow the front wheels to turn left and right while towing? If not, does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks.

Quite frankly, I didn't consider the idea of theft although the non-chipped key makes lots of sense.

No, my question has to do with the position the key has to be in for the steering wheel to be unlocked without drawing juice from the battery.

The steering wheel does not lock on the newer Chevy trucks. I didn't believe it till I was able to turn it when the key was in the locked position.

That answer is simple. Take your key, put it in the ignition lock and see where your steering column will unlock. As Carjon said, many of the new Chevy trucks don't lock at all. On my new Toyota, if I turn the key just back from Acc. all power is off and my steering column is unlocked. There is no "click" position for this, but it towed fine for 9,200 miles. I found this by "seeing if it would work" and it does. This is where the blank key comes into play, no swinging keys to turn the ignition switch to where I don't want it.

GM removed the steering lock feature from their trucks around 2003. Follow the manual, then take the key out of the ignition switch and lock the doors. We have towed our GMC for thousands of miles with it in park and the key in my pocket.
