Looking forward to seeing the Barnes and Noble Nook when it comes out in their stores the end of the month. Currently trying our a Sony Touch Reader. So far like it but glare could be better. On the Sony you can borrow books from the library for 21 days. Not sure you can do this with the Kindle or Nook?

It appears you can from the Rhode Island library system (Mobi format which works on Kindle) and I suspect many more will follow. That will explode this market for certain.

I spend a lot of time on the computer during the day. Reading an e-Reader with e-Ink paper (Kindle, Sony Reader, B&N Nook) is nothing at all like that. It's a lot like reading a paperback. Except that you don't have to hold it up to the right page. Or worry about a bookmark. Or wonder what you're going to do with it now that you've finished reading it. Or wait for paperbacks to actually come out, locate, etc... I also love it while camping, and love being able to take a library of (practically) any size I want with me and always having it take the same amount of space.
I currently have a Sony PRS-505. I used to have a Sony PRS-500 (the first one) and pre-ordered that one before they actually started shipping. I've been using one or the other since 2006.
In terms of hardware, the The e-Ink screens are all made by the same company, so should be comparable. (The additional color screen at the bottom of the Nook for book selection is intriguing though.) They all have adjustable font sizes that go from ridiculously large (IMO - but my wife uses the top size) to not-quite-small-enough (IMO). The Kindle and Nook have wireless downloading of books, but that also has downsides, at least with the kindle. Amazon can update the DRM permissions at any time, and has famously done so. The Kindle has text-to-speech. Sony doesn't. I've no idea if the Nook does or not.
In terms of software, there are a few differences between Sony, Kindle, and Nook. The Sony and Nook both support PDFs natively. The Kindle requires that they be converted by sending them to Amazon first. (For me, that's a deal-killer.) In terms of the book file formats, it appears they're all converging, but as usual with such things Sony is taking their time.
(Thought I had seen somewhere an announcement from Sony about supporting other DRM content formats, but can't find it now, so edited this post to remove that bit.)
There are some downsides:
I have to recharge mine roughly once a month. (I can easily charge it off the solar panel on my camper using a 12v to USB converter in a couple hours.)
If you leave it on a park bench in New Jersey and expect to get it back, think again. (Thus the PRS-505 ...)
It's a bit difficult to do, but you can break the screen by dropping it too many times, or dropping it just right. My wife managed to do this to hers. (Sony replaced the screen for about half the cost of a new one.)
The books are mostly about the same price as print books, but obviously can't be shared as widely or sold to the local used book store when you're done. Aside from that, about once a month Sony does a promo on some book, so if it's actually something desirable that's good. Amazon set a $9.99 max price on books for the Kindle. (Sony's book price varies more, but ends up averaging about the same.)

Spring Design seeks injunction barring Nook sales
If the contentions in the suit are correct (are they ever?) the Nook may not see the light of day.

If you both have a Kindle do you have to buy a book twice or can you still share the same title on two readers?

Kindle books can be shared between up to six Kindles, as long as they're all on the same account. We have two Kindles, and two Ipod Touch devices with Kindle readers-- that counts as four. Probably going to buy my mom a Kindle for Christmas, put her on our account, and she'll be able to read all the books we've purchased for no additional charge.

Quote: Kindle owners.....can you borrow books from the library? As I posted earlier, The Rhode Island library system lends e-books the same was they do paper ones. You wait in line and have a time limit. Hopefully this will spread quickly to other systems.
