Microsoft's new Essentials is by far the best of the free solutions. I am running it and it runs invisibly. I got the low down from Leo LePorte the tech guy.

I use Avast. Norton caused too many problems so I downloaded Avast and the Norton removal tool. Shut down the Internet connection then removed Norton, installed Avast and did a scan to get rid of what Norton missed, mostly spam with virus attachments that was already in the deleted folder. Avast does an auto update once a day and never seems to slow anything down while doing it.
I have heard AVG is good too but have never used it so that may be another good choice.
I don't really trust a Microsoft AV program to tell me the Microsoft operating system allowed a virus to enter and will now stop it. !!!

Norton is often free with rebates. I just installed Norton 2009 version (free) and it is much better than my older version.
I wouldn't run Norton 2009 on my system if they paid me! I've heard the Norton 2009 is way improved, and have a copy, and will not install it on my new laptop!!! No way.

I use Trend. It is user friendly and takes up less room then Norton. The people at Best Buy said it was the most popular nad they highly recommend it. Stay away for Mcfee also. 9I think that is what it is)

practice safe computing and run adaware once a year... never had a problem.
--Ditto-- although I do run Adaware a bit more often - maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

Harvard wrote: Any recommendations on Anti Virus software other then Norton? My regular LapTop is tied up in a knots by a Norton program named ALEUpdat.exe every time I try to log onto my dialup ISP connection.
Mine did the same...this weekend.....i used a program called Security Task Manager to quarrintine and stop that process...It's the worm program for Norton.....it just used up all my CPU.....it kept it at 100%....so I just had to kill the process....
Go get it Here.....they let your use it for free for a while....worked great!
YOU CAN NOT STOP THAT PROCESS ANY OTHER WAY EXCEPT REMOVING NORTON.

I have run AVG and Avast over the years. Like the previous posts I just switched to Microsoft Security Essentials
It seems to work fine and does not slow down the system.
You might want to give it a try.
