We are looking to buy/trade for a vehicle we may tow behind out mh.

We have aFord Contour, but it is FWD, automatic so towing it w/o a dolly would be a problem. We have a dolly but people hereon have stated the horrors of towing a dolly, so if we cou.ld trade for a standard shift small pickup with ac it would suit our needs.

Have you tried towing it. True there more work getting on the dolly, but not the horror some would have you believe. I've done it both ways, dolly and tow bar, I prefer the tow bar, when I take my Nissan, I use the dolly. JM2Cents Bill

I think a Jeep 4 wheel drive, manual or auto, makes a great toad. It's easy to hook-up and will go anywhere you want once you unhook it again.

FWD? Four wheel drive or front wheel drive? Front wheel drive is towable on a dolly, four wheel drive is NOT unless you can disconnect the rear axle from the transfer case.

BTW: there is no "horror" in towing with a dolly, it works very well. Those that have troubles didn't do something right. I've towed both ways and prefer the dolly as I know that the transmission won't overheat the CV joints and suspension is not getting worn out while towing.

I tried a Chrysler Sebring coupe and found it set too low and had a nose too long forward of the front wheels so wouldn't ramp up to the dolly without tearing off the low air dam in front. Some FWD cars are too low to mount the dolly.

I bought a Chevy Geo Tracker for a dinghy. Works great, is very light and is 4 wheel drive.

Quite a few people use the Honda CRV. It can be towed four down without any modifications.

We tow a Hummer, but it weighs 4,700 lbs and is not suitable for most.

Have towed both ways and find either to be fine. If your dolly has brakes stay with it and save yourself the expense. Some on this forum overstate the problems with a dolly and seem to feel that unless you tow 4 dwn. it's a crime. As stated above BOTH ways of towing are fine and the dolly does offer a greater range of dinghies that can be towed..

Above said, have towed 4 dwn. for over 3 yrs. after happily towing on a dolly for approx. 5 years. Son now uses the dolly, but, it is available if we get a dinghy that can not be towed 4 dwn. Good luck with towing method you choose.

I bought an automatic Jeep Liberty 4x4 because it's virtually 'plug & play' for flat towing. It has a transfer case that shifts into neutral and essentially makes it a roller skate. Jeep have a section for flat towing in the owner's manual.

It has lots of room and handles really well. Jeep re-designed the Liberty in 2008 and it's entirely different from any other Jeeps that I've had in the past.
