I am running Vista and would like to know the best way to implement a login and password on my desktop.

If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del there is an option to:
- Lock this computer
- Change Password

I dont presently have a login/pw as I run as admin as would anyone else.

Whats the safest way without locking myself out too? I just want to be sure.

The safest would be to implement the password system IF there is a chance someone could get a hold of your computer and try to get info from it. If not, I wouldn't worry about it and leave it as it is. You didn't say whether it was a laptop or desktop. If you ever take a laptop from your home, there is always the chance it will be stolen or compromised. Either way your admin priviledges will not change.

Under user account as the administrator, I established a password. The password has to be entered in order for the laptop to boot into windows or to come out of window's lock mode. That protects confidential business and client information when I've momentarily stepped away from the laptop.

We used passwords to protect our computers from the sneakly little paws of our wandering felines. Nothing like having a document (or whatever) mucked up by a cat on a keyboard.

Running a Windows system under the Administrator account is bad business. If you mess it up you are toast. Make another duplicate account with a different name as Administrator and use that one.
You can give both password protection under User Accounts.

I agree with "weasel4", you should have a user name with password, and an administrator name with password. One nice thing about Vista is that when it needs the administrator permissions, it will ask you if you want to proceed, and then bring up a small window where you put in the administrator password. This is REAL important since some of the Internet Viruses want to install a program on your computer. If you are logged on as an admin, it will just say "do you want to do this?", and many times you get caught off guard and say "yes" without realizing that the "doing this" is "loading a new program onto your computer". But when you have to put in that password too, you think about it more and are more likely to say "cancel".
