The display in the dash radio got so dim that it could not be read. I boxed it up and sent it off for repair. The USPS managed to damage the unit to the extent that Kenwood is uncertain whether it can be repaired. I will have to pay $35 to know whether or not it is repairable and how much it will cost. But that's my problem and it cannot be solved here.
Can anyone tell me what model of radio, if any, that will fit in the dash of my 2001 Diplomat? I don't care about the features, apart from it having AM/FM and CD capability. I'm looking for something that will fit in the sleeve-bracket-receptacle-pigeonhole (hereinafter "thingy") in the dash and hopefully has the same receptacle for the multi-wire plug for power and speakers. The original Kenwood unit is model number KDC-115S.
The Kenwood repair center was not sure what models, if any, would be a compatible direct replacement.
Does that "thingy" into which the radio chassis fits conform to some standard dimension or profile that accepts various makes and models of radios?
Thanks,
Dave

Is the picture of the dash the same as you have in your coach?
If so, the stereo is a "Single Din" size. That is a very common size stereo.
Most stereos will fit and connect very easily with a "Wire Harness". If that is not the same dash or stereo size PM me and I will help you in more detail.

Thanks, Daryl. I'll look on the net and see if I can isolate "Single DIN" models.

Go to Crutchfield.com and pick the one you like. They are excellent with helping you get everything you need for installation. If you can read simple instructions and you are not color blind, you will be able to install this in under an hour by yourself. It is really that easy. If you have a Best Buy near by, they also sell them and they will even install it for you. It is a common size, and setup.

Based on the model you have, any single DIN reciever will work.
I recently replaced the kenwood in my 2001 Monaco with a Sony CDXGT530UI that had a USB interface on the front that I could connect and control an ipod through the reciever and by the wireless remote (my reciever is not easy to reach while driving.) It also has an auxilary input that I send my satalite radio through. So I really have my choice of music on the long drives down the highway.
But if I had waited a few months the deck I would have gotten which is not super expensive would have been the JVC KD-HD50R which has the same features, a n easier to use interface plus HD radio for the same price for the reciever. Both recievers are in the 150 dollar range. I bought the JVC for a friends recently licensed daughter so comparing the two I like the JVC more.

It turns out that the Kenwood KDC-138/CR is a direct replacement for the original dash radio in the thread title. As suggested above I ordered it from Crutchfield. Although they could not/would not guarantee that the harness plug and mounting sleeve would be 100% compatible I went ahead based on the fact that the radio would be supplied with a harness adapter and new mounting sleeve.
In the end I did not need either one. It slipped into the sleeve and the plug was an exact fit. Powered it up and the radio supplied audio to all of the coach's speakers. Now I can see what station it's tuned to.
FWIW,
