Can a laptop with Vista run a second monitor showing an application other than the one that is displayed on the laptop monitor?
I would like to run a GPS program on one and an engine monitoring system on the other.
If so, can a PC Stupie do this?

Most graphics cards today have that function. Once you connect a second monitor to your notebook, use your notebook's monitor function key to display your desktop on both notebook and external monitor simultaneously. This should be a mirror display, which is not what you want. Then go into your graphics card options, generally accessible from your desktop properties, and look under options for multiple monitor setup. There should be an option that allows you to extend your desktop to a second monitor, commonly referred to as "Dual View."

And if you PC does not support two monitors you can get a USB video adapter from HP.

i dont use vista but i would have to assume yes.. it would require a dual head video card which is common in laptops...

i run my laptop screen plus a 22" lcd @ 1680x1050 wide i love it. check your display properties > display settings you should be able to right click a second monitor when detected to enable it.

I'm using two 21.5" external wide screen displays with my Dell Latitude laptop. 40" of display is very very cool.

to answer your question in a nutshell - yes. The caveat is your laptop probably doesn't have more than one Monitor connection on it and your video driver needs to support it.

To enable it, you have to go to the video driver properties and turn on Extended Desktop. Then press the Fn button and the one that enables external monitors (e.g. F8 key on most Dell laptops). Assuming you have your laptop open, your external monitor should show the background on your current desktop - and your mouse should scroll from the laptop screen to the monitor.
