Was considering using US 301 from Orangeburg, SC down to Florida as a diversion to I-26 and I-95. What should I expect as far as traffic, cities and generally slow pace. Or should I just gut it out and stick to I-95 and Jacksonville.

Just traveled that road last week, it is a nice relaxing drive. Had to slow down in all of the small towns, we enjoyed the ride. I hate I 95 the traffic and construction are getting worse every year. I don't think that the constuction in GA will ever be finished, job security or did Obama make that one of his projects?

I'd take it any day over 95. It used to be a major south/north route before the interstate was built, and some of the old filling stations, motels, etc. that couldn't make it after the interstate opened are still there, all grown over with vines. Kinda fun to imagine what it was like back when they were thriving. Snakes must love it too!

When traveling to Jacksonville, FL from up state, SC, We usually travel hi way 25 through Augusta, GA and then further on, 301 into Jax. We enjoy it so much more than I-26 and I-95. I believe you would also.

Thanks everyone for the great info. I think I will give it a whack this year. Like one poster, I just dread the I-95 corridor through SC and GA not to mention Jacksonville.
