Looking to go from Vancouver to Sedona Arizona next year. Pulling a 35" fifth wheel. Looking for the route with least mountain climbing. I know I'm the west coast but just thinking about fuel and wear.
Appreciate anyone who might have made the trip before.
Thanks

I would use I5 to Hwy 58....to Bakersfield and through to Barstow. Pickup I40 east at Barstow and then to Flagstaff and I17 south a little way......and your almost there.

We just headed down through eastern Oregon, and on down. I will say, do not take the 89a cutoff from 17 south of Flagstaff. 89a is not for RV's, especially pulling a fifthwheel. I went down it with a 30' motorhome years ago, never again! The hair-pin turns are so sharp, that the front end was swinging out into on coming lane to make the corner! That part of it is like coming down a cliff with sharp steep switch backs. Check it out on Google Maps. 89a north of Sedona. It is VERY beautiful though, and I would highly recommend parking the trailer somewhere in Sedona and going to check it out.

I'd concur. Take I-17 south of Sedona, and then take 179 back to the north. The construction should be done by next year.

Where are you staying? We did the Rancho Sedona RV Park thing. Good location, quiet, nice park. They're kinda anal about their dog rules, but it's all common courtesy - they just enforce it. Don't leave trash outside overnight - the racoons and the skunks will find it and love you for it!

Instead of climbing to about 7000 feet at Flagstaff, turn off at Ash Fork az (hwy 89 ) take this south for about 45 miles ,1/2 way between Chino Valley & Prescott Az, you will see a freeway ( this is a bypass around Prescott & Prescott Valley ) turn left on this Hwy 89a Freeway , at end of the freeway ( about 8 or 10 miles) the hwy splits Hwy 89a to the left ( Do Not Take This) take the right fork ( Fain Road ) take Fain Rd to Hwy 69 turn left on hwy 69 ,go to 2nd or 3rd Light turn left (hwy 169 ) take hwy 169 to I17 , take I17 to hwy 260 (Camp Verde , left on Hwy 260 to Cottonwood, turn right on hwy 89A to Sedona Az , this part of 89A is good road.

It shorter this way & no mountain to climb , all good 2 lane road , a few hills.

PM us if more ?
P.S. the drive north of Sedona on 89A without the RV is great

We did the Prescott to Sedona route several years ago and it was an easy drive with no real hard pulls. If you plan to stay at Rancho Sedona I believe this route takes you right by the park.

We have been to the area several times and will be there again in a week or so.

We always stay at Distant Drums in Camp Verde and drive to Sedona. One stay at Rancho Sedona was enuf for us. Can be very tight unless you pay for their high priced premium sites. Even the interior roads are very tight. Distant Drums is a great place and you just shoot up Hwy 179 to Sedona. Lots of construction still going on in Sedona on the roads / bridge. And the major bridge repair is right by Rancho Sedona.

We love the area. We hike and drive backroads. You will want to get up Schnebly Hill Road to the overlook but it is a very, very, VERY bad road and takes a long time. Suggest you take a jeep tour (espensive like everything in Sedona) or, if you choose, take your TV. We have done it with a TV and it just takes time.

The problem with that - and the jeep tour - is that you don't get there early in the morning and later in the day when the colors and shadows are the best. If you are interested in a good way to get there or other Sedona info just PM or email me.

Be safe.

I thought there was a length restriction on 89 south out of Ash Fork? I don't remember what it was though. I was pulling a 20' trailer and was too long(about 59' total). I turned around went back to Flagstaff. Highway 179 was no problem. We have stayed at Distant Drums twice at Camp Verde. Thought it was nice and clean.
