Hello,

Is it possible to safely bicycle some back roads between Yuma and the Foothills area or are the connecting roads all just really busy and dangerous ones?

Thanks,
Ken

I wouldn't try it, because of the traffic I've seen on those roads. I do a lot of bike riding along the canal as it is closed to motorized traffic.

No way. There are no back roads. All the roads have too much traffic for bicycling.

Whoa, there. Ken, is it transportation or recreation you're looking for with the use of your bike? There is at least one major club there that has it's riders very visible in groups all the way out to Welton the other side of the Foothills. They can be seen riding literaly everywhere around and in Yuma and the Foothills. Played golf at least 3 times a week out in the Foothills area and came upon those folks EVERY time I went out there. If you want recreational riding those folks I'm sure would welcome you along. Everything from recumbants to duplex's are in that group at any given ride.

I too was thinking about biking in Yuma. Is there a bike lane along the canal? How far can you go? I was there last Jan. but did not pay attention to the area around the canals. Thxs.

Albertaguy, you will be able to log many miles on your bikes down there if using the canal service roads, just slime your tires first as those "prickly spines" are disastrous to bike tires. A few folks from the park we stayed at used to ride for hours all around Yuma and have done so for years of travelling down there.

You might get an idea using "Google Earth" to zoom in on areas near where you're going to be staying and get a birds eye view of what you might expect.

On both sides of the canal where we stay there are dirt roads. They are wide enough for maintenance trucks to travel on. I don't know how far they go, but would think you would not run out of road as long as there is canal. BTW, in some areas the dirt can be soft, so if you're riding a road bike be careful.

My first day out with a bike, and I had two flats....Yes, slime can work, but flats can still occur. Another option is to remove the inner tubes and have them replaced with a foam rubber tube. The material is similar to that used in drink can coolers, and is a lifetime fix. Cost me $20 a tire at a bike shop....after years of use, the tire will eventually wear completely through and the foam will still be functional.

Use Google Earth to look at the area, there are no roads. Yes, you can ride along the canals, but after 2 times, it's boring. Yuma was one of the worst places we've ever been for bike riding. Go to Tucson, way better.
