I'm shopping for an RV to be used as a primary residence. I know that payments, for tax purposes, are treated just like mortgage payments. So does that mean that a newly-purchased RV would be eligible for the $8,000 tax credit for new homebuyers? If so, that would be a tremendous incentive.

Any suggestions as to where I might research this?

The government website is probably your best source of information and what you do with the information open to interpretation is up to you. http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=206291,00.html

From IRS.gov. (I think this is the same as above..)

Q. Can an individual who has lived in an RV qualify for the credit?

A. For purposes of the first-time homebuyer credit, an RV with a built-in motor is personal property that is not affixed to land and does not qualify as a principal residence. Accordingly, someone who has owned and lived in an RV within the past three years may still qualify as a first-time homebuyer.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I found this interesting from the website to which Rocky2 gave the link:

Q. Can a taxpayer who purchases a travel trailer qualify for the credit?

A. A travel trailer that is affixed to land may qualify as a principal residence.

So that begs the question, what does "affixed to land" mean, exactly?

I did find this publication from the IRS concerning a federal tax deduction on Motorhomes. It seems some persons will qualify to deduct the taxes or a portion of on a new Motorhome purchase if made by a certain date. Maybe you can get a little relief on your costs with this.

Since the government has seen fit to give tax credits for houses which now is even an additional $6500 tax credit for upgrading, you would think they would extend it to the RV industry since they are struggling just as bad as the housing industry and the auto industry. If things continue to get worse there may be many more living full time in their campers. I have thought about that option myself.

I was at a RV place yesterday getting my View serviced, and apparently if you buy an RV (or any other vehicle) this year, you can deduct your sales tax. For an expensive rig, that's quite a chunk of change.
