Our septic tank gets pumped about every 6-7 years. When it was pumped this year there was about 2' of matted TP at the bottom of the tank. As soon as the septic guy saw this he asked me if we used Costco Kirkland brand TP. We have been using costco/kirkland TP for years now. He said many of the their customers have been having similar problems with the costco TP and his company strongly recommends using another brand. I guess it doesn't break down correctly or something.
Anybody else have an issue like this with Kirkland TP and a septic system?
I was here when they pumped the tank and got to see the matt of TP. Since then I've been a bit paranoid about what TP we use and I have been buying single ply from the regular grocery store. Single ply TP is very hard to find around here and pretty costly when you do find it.
I had to buy some charmin 2-ply the other day and after months of using single ply I was amazed at how thick and supple the charmin was. Kind of like using a soft blanket or something. Might be good for my bottom but I wonder if it is good for the septic system?
I wonder if there is truly any septic friendly 2-ply out there these days. All of the packaging says approved for use in septic systems, including the above mentioned Charmin, so that is not much help.

We use septic safe TP. In 18 years it's only been pumped out once and that was about 2 years ago.

Is there a specific type of septic safe TP that is better or worse than the others? Just about every package of 2-ply that I've looked at says it is safe for the septic system, including the before mentioned Kirkland and Charmin brands.

A few years ago I had trouble with my sewer. The only people in the area that had a snake long enough was Roto Rooter. The guy showed up and the first thing he asked was what were we using for TP. I told him Northern. He said GOOD. He told us that Charmin was a problem for sewer systems because it didn't break down easily. He also said that plain white paper was best. It turned out that the problem was was tree roots. fought it for a couple of years and replaced sewer line with rigid plastic.
We still use Northern though the last time we bought they were out of our regular type so we picked up the quilted soft to the bottom stuff. Find out it is about a half inch narrower than the regular. Hope it don't get down to one finger width.

Before we moved to our present place we lived in a rural area near a beach and the house had a septic system. We used Kirkland exclusively and never had a problem. The buyers of our place requested a septic inspection prior to closing and the pump/inspection guy pronounced it perfectly healthy.
Go figure.

Hubby and I decided years ago to treat our home system the same as our trailer. We don't put tp in the toilet unless necessary. We toss the paper in the wastebasket and empty it daily; no odor...and our septic system has always been problem free. Whatever works for you, right?

Scott single ply tissue is the MOST septic safe tissue on the market and the only thing I would put down the pipe in either of our last two houses. The kids, and DW, have always been well trained and know that no other paper product goes down the toilet.
Test your tissue. See how well it dissolves in water.
Look here to read about Scott Tissue's quick dissolving properties and to look at demos of testing.

The 99¢ Store always has 4-packs of single-ply TP and I assume many of the dollar stores probably do, too. It's what we always get for the RV.

We have a septic system that was pumped 13 years ago when we bought the house. During that time I have used Charmin exclusively and never had a problem of any kind.
