We'd like to spend next summer parked somewhere so we can train all season for a major bicycle ride in September. I've read that the Santa Rosa area is a good area for cycling, Levi Leipheimer lives there, after all. Any thoughts on good parks? I checked an RV park review site and they're all just awful sounding! We're thinking about the Santa Rosa or Cloverdale area. Allegedly one can ride many miles on the road without hostile drivers. We're not mountain bikers, we're roadies, we don't have that skill set. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Spring Lake Regional Park, Hilton Park Family Campground, Schoolhouse Canyon Camp Ground, Windsorland RV Park are close to Santa Rosa.

Are you looking for full hook-ups? What price range are you looking for? There aren't a whole lot of choices in the area so it helps to have a better idea exactly what you are looking for!

Yes, we're looking for full hookups, 50 amps. We know it's going to be expensive.

Here is one in Cotati, about 6 miles south of Santa Rosa and well off the freeway (101) and they have weekly rates:
Wine Country RV Park
Another, more expensive and closer to the freeway, is the Petaluma KOA. Petaluma is about 10-12 miles south of Santa Rosa:
Petaluma KOA
Here is one in Bodega Bay, on the coast about 15 miles (as the crow flies) from Santa Rosa. Again, it's got great access to the country roads you were talking about:
Porto Bodega RV Park
The first two parks are well placed for easy access to the back country roads you have heard so much about and close to Santa Rosa.
If none of these parks work for you I'll try to come up with an alternative, but, the full hook-up parks in the area are few.
You're right about everything you have heard regarding the local back-roads and the attitude toward road bikes in the general, many cyclists come here to train even though they don't live locally. There are a great many things to do in the area, and we are only about a one hour drive from San Francisco. If you are into wine you would be in the heart of wine country (Sonoma, Napa, Alexander Valley, etc.).
We live in the area and can answer further questions about restaurants, RV repair, area traffic & roads, etc. Either post here or PM me.

Cloverdale KOA is nice and fairly quiet and very near some great riding, if you like hills. Santa Rosa is farther south and is somewhat more urban. The roads leading west from Cloverdale and Healdsburg toward the ocean have no traffic and wonderful views. It can get hot in the summer. This is where a lot of the Tour de France folks do their training.
Too rugged for me, though. Riding through Dry Creek is more my speed -- excellent old vine Zinfandels.
Also, check out Dutcher Creek RV Park near Cloverdale -- very quiet, fewer amenities.

i think you would be happier staying in the Napa Valley. the bike lanes in the valley are pretty wide and drivers are used to bicycles here. you can get some elevation and can go thru Sonoma County also.
the Tour of California came from Santa Rosa thru here and to Sacramento.
lots of riders train here and you can be centrally located.
but Santa Rosa is central to Sonoma County and you can ride to the ocean or find some hills to climb.
i'm not familiar with how bike friendly the roads are there.
i do ride road in Napa Valley and feel safer here than anywhere else i've ridden.

Seems things are changing on our usually bike friendly back-roads. This article was in our local county paper today:
Tough to share the road
