We have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 that we accidentally changed oil and used a Fram filter. The engine immediately started a tapping sound when cold and goes away as the engine heats. We were later told that Fram was a no-no in Chrysler engines.
We changed the filter to a NAPA Gold and want to change the oil from the recommended 5W 30 to a 5W 20 or to a synthetic. Any thoughts out there on what oil would be good? Can a synthetic be added to conventional oil without any problems? Got to do something as this gas engine sounds awful (like in a diesel engine) when the engine should be very quiet.
Thanks for any info.

I have used Mobil One in all my vehicles with a Wix (NAPA Gold) filter and have never had an issue. My 2005 Dodge 4.7L ran like a top and it got new oil and filter every 10k miles. Had a 2002 VW Jetta TDI and I changed the oil every 20k miles and the filter every 10k miles. No problems and sold it with nearly 200k on it. Suburban with a 454 had almost 250k on it and it ran like a top, changed oil every 10k. Will never use anything different.
