RE: Contrast Ratio -Huge Disparity - Does it Really Matter?

Contrast ratio is very important. The higher the better.
The size screen you get should be determined by the viewing distance. I have a 32" and view it at about 8'. I would probably been happier with the 36" for that distance.
I use a 47" 1080p monitor from 7 ft away with my Mac. I would not be able to read most text very well on a 32" or 36" from 8 ft away.

RE: Windows 7

Both my HP color Laserjet 1600 and Epson R280 photo printer have 32 and 64 bit Windows 7 printer drivers . BTW I have been running Firefox on 64 bit Windows 7 beta and RC since January.

RE: What's the Difference Between 32 and 64 bit Windows 7

Advantages when you install a 64-bit version of Windows 7
* Increased memory support beyond that of the 4-GB addressable memory space that is available in a 32-bit operating system
* Increased program performance for programs that are written to take advantage of a 64-bit operating system
* Enhanced security features
What to consider when you install a 64-bit version of Windows 7
* 64-bit device drivers may not be available for one or more devices in the computer.
* Device drivers must be digitally signed.
* 32-bit device drivers are not supported.
* 32-bit programs may not be fully compatible with a 64-bit operating system.
* It may be difficult to locate programs that are written specifically for a 64-bit operating system.
* Not all hardware devices may be compatible with a 64-bit version of Windows 7

RE: Most reliable laptops?

If you go to the PC mag web site and search you will likely find an article on the Most RUGGED laptops.. .However as for most reliable.. I'm not sure there is one.
Personally I'm partial to THinkpads.. but my reasons are "none of the above"

RE: Would you miss Saturday home mail delivery?

Personally, I wouldn't miss it a bit. Sometimes, I go 3 or 4 days without going to the mail box to bring in the mail.
But, other than the gas and wear on the mail trucks, how much would they save? They aren't going to cut the pay of the delivery person.
Wrong
"The Postmaster General also wants Congress to give him the authority to eliminate Saturday delivery, saying this cut would save $3.5 billion a year starting in 2011. The two mail carriers’ unions, NALC (urban) and NLRCA (rural), oppose five-day delivery, which would eliminate tens of thousands of delivery jobs."

RE: Most reliable laptops?

There are a myriad of hardware/software combos from the big companies so they may have some combos that have high reliability and some not. My HP laptop has been used by my 6 year old grandson almost everyday since April 2008 and on three vacations without a single problem. Here is a video of him on his Nintendo DS and the laptop at the end of the clip were I was testing my Rode Stereo VideoMic a few weeks ago at North Myrtle Beach.

RE: Climatologists baffled by Global warming stall

How we know global warming is still happening, Part 1
Skeptics proclaim that global warming stopped in 1998. That we’re now experiencing global cooling. However, these arguments overlook one simple physical reality — the land and atmosphere are only one small fraction of the Earth’s climate (albeit the part we inhabit). Global warming is by definition global. The entire planet is accumulating heat due to an energy imbalance. The atmosphere is warming. Oceans are accumulating energy. Land absorbs energy and ice absorbs heat to melt. To get the full picture on global warming, you need to view the Earth’s entire heat content.

Fast on the heels of the hottest June to September on record*, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies reports that last month was tied for the second hottest October on record (after 2005).
Unlike NOAA, which announced its October global analysis with a major “State of the Climate” monthly update, NASA just quietly updates its data set (here). So you have to do a little math to see that for the June through October period, 2009 now tops both 1998 (easily) and 2005 (just barely, hence the asterisk).
For NOAA, it was the sixth warmest October on record, and the fifth-warmest January-through-October period:

RE: Would you miss Saturday home mail delivery?

I'd only support stopping Saturday mail delivery IF they also reduce the employees wages and benefits by 14% across the board. They'd be working 14% less hours a week so why shouldn't their compensations reflect it? Non governmental employees are treated to the compensation cuts for reduced working hours so why aren't governmental/postal employees? Keeping their compensations at the same level is the same as giving them a 14% increase for doing NOTHING! Each working day eliminated is another 14%. Are Wednesday's next???? Maybe cut it down to 1 day a week delivery and also cut their compensations by 86% and make the Postal Service really profitable so they can cut postage rates accordingly. Maybe part time employees that work 1 day a week??
While we are at it. Let's cut delivery out all together and make people go get their mail when they want to. Think of the traffic jams and extra fuel comsumption etc. Think of how huge the trash bins would have to be at the Post Office to hold all the junk mail people would toss immediately. Junk mailers would soon get the hint and stop spending their money on immediately tossed trash. No bills would suddenly appear at your home! Somehow, that has a nice ring to it!!!
Cut the fat, cost overuns, and inefficiency out of the present governmental run system and delivery methods and don't ruin it! Anything government run is awash with waste and inefficiency and how many past and present examples do we need to teach us the obvious. Are we so stupid as to add more government run loser programs????
What makes you think the USPS pays for non-work days ? The USPS only pays for hours worked.

RE: Would you miss Saturday home mail delivery?

Well, the head of FedEx stated he could deliver letter mail throughout the US for .10 cents per piece, have it all delivered overnight and still make a profit. So why can't the government?
Try at least $10 and not .10 cents. The USPS will pickup a letter from my mailbox and deliver it anywere in the USPS system that includes Alaska, Guam etc for 44 cents.

RE: Texan drives $1 million sports car into marshes !

Right, drive a $1.25 million Bugatti Veyron into the water just to get on youtube.
Like I said, just some very sad people trying to get attention. People have done dumber things. Seems awfully convenient that at the exact time he chose to be an idiot someone chose to film him.
What makes you think someone who has the world's fastest and most expensive car would drive it into water just to get attention ?

Texan drives $1 million sports car into marshes !

Driver blames bird, dropped cellphone; Bugatti Veyron is world's priciest car
LA MARQUE, Texas - A man blamed a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston.
The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.
The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist.
The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.
Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was not injured.
Celebrity driver
The police declined to release the driver's name, although the incident has drawn a great deal of attention on his vehicle.
The Houston Chronicle reported the Texan has become something of a celebrity. He reportedly told the Texas City wrecker driver who towed his car that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called him Wednesday, along with several other celebrities.
“He said he was getting so many calls that he finally stopped answering his phone,” said wrecker driver Gilbert Harrison of MCH Truck and Auto, which is storing the car.
But Harrison said the driver seemed to take his very expensive mistake in stride.
“He was calm,” Harrison told the Chronicle. “If it had been me, I'd have been cussing, but he was calm. I imagine inside he was probably pretty upset.”
The Bugatti Veyron is the fastest and most expensive production car in the world.
A 2006 Bugatti Veyron was recently offered for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., for $1.25 million.

RE: Ya gotta love printer mfrs!

Agree, and the next time you upgrade your windows operating system, you'll probably also need a new printer because of no driver support for you 6 month old printer. They can produce these printers faster overseas than they can write software for them.:B My son wanted a Gibson copy guitar for Christmas, I said BS on that, I bought him an original Gibson for 3 times the price, but I might have saved somebodys job in Nashville, not in China.
My older HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer has 64-bit Windows 7 drivers along with XP and Vista in both 32-bit and 64-bit.

RE: Video, Antonov 225 Takeoff.

updated AN225 @ Hahn Airport on the taxiway video
AN225 @ Hahn Airport - Generator being loaded into AN225 video
AN225 @ Hahn Airport - Walking inside the AN225 video
After a lengthy refit and life extension program in Antonov Design Bureau's facilities in Kiev during the first part of this year the Antonov An-225 has claimed a new world record airlift out of Frankfurt Hahn Airport.
Antonov-225 in new livery
Antonov-225 in new livery. Click to Enlarge
Antonov Airlines’ An-225 'Mriya' is the only example of the heavy-lift freighter, the world’s largest operational aircraft with a maximum gross weight of 640 tonnes (1,411,000 lb) and payload of 250 tonnes.
The aircraft now sports a new livery featuring the blue and yellow national colours of Ukraine.
The world record lift was 16.2m (53ft)-long generator destined for a gas plant in Armenia. Following earlier extremely heavy loads which took rather longer to complete the loading methods and equipment have clearly improved considerably as the aircraft arrived in Hahn on 11 August and departed on the 12th before returning for a second large piece the following day making the carriage of such extraordinary pieces look routine.
The total cargo load totalled 190 tonnes including the loading frame with the generator weighing in 187.6t.
