RE: Misson Bay San Diego Camping Question

Man if you could camp for free there you would not have been able to see the beach from all the Campers :)

RE: 50 amp RV,how is it setup?

Which is interesting since there is no nuetral going to a stove. I believe the ground becomes the neutral to run lights and timers on them since the ground and neutral come together at the panel. Correct? Wrong. Stoves use a 50A 4 wire connection the same as RVs that have both a ground and a neutral. Older 3 wire 240/120V outlets (no longer current code) did not have a ground. Any remodeling or new construction requires the newer 4 wire connetion. In NY it must still be ok to use 3 wire 240 for stoves. I'm a tech at a 320 unit apartment complex and the stoves we buy take three wires and the pig tails only have three. Must be diff where you are. BTW..the three wire has two hot legs and a ground..no nuetral. It is still ok to use them as long as it is not new construction.

RE: 50 amp RV,how is it setup?

Man... I think I'll just stick to 30 amp rv's..but thanks! But you guys did teach me a thing or two just in case..lol. So on a 50 amp service in the RV there are two 120's (split phase). Consenting of two 120 legs, one neutral and a ground. There are two 50 amp breakers...plus your branch circuits. I'm used to working with 240 volt stoves and what not where there is no nuetral. So it was confusing me that the 50 amp RV has one...I see why now, mostly it is because there are no 240 volt appliances in them...at least most of the RVs. Just two 120 lines that share a nuetral. I tried to google about it before but I always ended up more confused after words..lol. 1- 50amp Double Pole Breaker :) "120v/240v" Household Stoves/Ranges do use a Neutral: heating elements utilize the 240v available while Timers, Lights use the 120v available which requires a neutral. Which is interesting since there is no nuetral going to a stove. I believe the ground becomes the neutral to run lights and timers on them since the ground and neutral come together at the panel. Correct? Technically it is a neutral :) In a 3-wire 120v/240v range circuit you have Hot Hot Neutral

RE: 50 amp RV,how is it setup?

Never had one but may latter in life. I have heard diff versions on how they are wired and protected. For this discussion I only really want to know about the ones that don't have 240 volt appliances. (a)I have heard that there is two hot legs...some say in phase some say out,one neutral and one ground. (B) I have heard that there are two 50amp breakers also heard some say there is a 30 and a 20 amp breaker, which is it? While we are on this if there is two 50 amp breakers is that not like 100 amps available? (C) Since there is only one neutral for two hot legs and lets say the load is balanced I would think their would be little if nothing going back through the neutral. But if you were drawing 40 amps on one leg and nothing on the other would not the neutral be carrying 40 amps back? And if that neutral ever opened it could be really bad for things right? Thanks in advance! A & B http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb122/EdConley/Plugs/rv-service3.jpg

RE: DirectTv question

I do not really care about the HD channels (but I do want the rest of them on my plan - especially the sports). Thanks! Kent the simple 18" dish will not work for you since you DO want HD for the Sports Channels :)

RE: White Line for Backing In

We have an elderly couple in our club. When they arrive at a space, she gets out with a radio and starts talking him into the site. One time it was a particularly narrow site. He pulled forward, backed, pulled forward again and backed right in. When he got out of the motor home a neighbor came over and told him it looked like they had done that a time or two. His reply was: yes and some day I am going to change the batteries in her radio. That's funny!! he's either quick witted or been waiting to use that one for a while I bet. I like to make my DW think she helps a lot but to be honest my 3 year old boy does just as good a job she does, which is good for a 3 YO! One time I was backing my enclosed motorcycle trailer up the driveway to the edge of the garage, my boy was helping me like he was marshaling a plane which is cute, then he was telling me "that's good daddy, stop"...I should have listened, I thought I had another 18 inches or so to ease back but I didn't, broke the trim off the edge of the garage door opening... Same with my Son, Not so much backing in to a spot but hooking up. He sits in the bed and directs me and as you did I didn't trust him when he said "That's good, stop".... back up a wee bit and hit the Tongue... " I said Stop Dad!" DW had the best direction while backing up to Hook Up: she's pointing left, left and then she points up! I just chuckled and told her that we could lower the tongue instead of raising the back end of the truck :)

RE: Stupid Brake Controller Question

What does the phrase "brake controler" mean. It means a instrument to control the brakes. With out it. They won't work. NO the 7 pin does NOT control the brakes. Ok so your saying that if I just hook the TT up to my truck with an aftermarket brake controller that brakes on the TT will not work and that all braking will be done by the truck..Correct?? No. he is stating that the 7-Pin in itself does not CONTROL the brakes no more than your electrical socket in the wall controls a Lamp plugged in to it- The Light Switch(Controller) is what controls the Light- on/off:) The 7-Pin just delivers the electrical signal generated by the Brake Controller. You need a Brake controller to Control the brakes on the Trailer.

RE: Stupid Brake Controller Question

The Brake controller Controls the Brakes on the Trailer and is tied in to the TV's brakes: Step on the Brakes and the Controller sends a signal to the Trailer Brakes to engage. The manual lever on the Brake controller is so that you can send the signal with out having to step on the TV's Brake pedal. One instance where you would use the manual lever is if the Trailer starts to sway- reach over and apply the Trailer Brakes manually and the Trailer will straighten out. :)

RE: Quieting a Generator

Muffler Sound proofing Proff's Box oops I see 2oldman already done posted the links. Guy, The search feature does take a bit to actually find threads- lot's of info on everything- I wasn't trying to be a smartass and just say Search :) just didn't have time to look up some of the links. Probably the easiest method to reduce noise is put a Chair or something over there with a Furnipad hung on it to block the sound.

RE: Let's discuss gray water

I don't wash grease or food down the sink since I hate washing dishes anyway using disposable plates and forks. Using common sense and being courteous is the way to go. I have a question. Where do you buy disposable pots and pans? Walmart http://slagpit.com/forums/images/smilies/mutley.gif

RE: Electrical outage

Check the GFI in the Lav with the meter. GFI's need power to be able to reset so make sure the Shore power cord is plugged in.

RE: 100 foot 30 cord

Yes no worries. I would just use some 10/3 cord from Home Depot. Yes voltage may sag a bit into the 105-110 range which is fine assuming the house is a solid 120-122. Calculator above says #10 will only drop 5 volts with 20 amp load for the air and fridge. That sounds pretty solid to me and no need for #8 or #6. I agree- and he can put the Fridge on Propane. You can but 100' Ridgid 10/3 Cord with 5-15 Connectors on it at Home Depot for about 100 bux- whack the Female end off and put a TT-30. Pic.k up a 5 gallon bucket while yer there to coil up the 100' cord in to :) Ridgid Ext Cord I just noticed you said you have a 30amp box at the house- asssuming it is a TT-30, then replace both ends with TT-30 Male /Female
